AI applications within the realm of augmented reality are emerging at a rapid pace. Tech giants like Meta have been at the forefront of investigating the synergy between AI and AR, having released an augmented reality engine back in 2017 via an application that harnesses a local deep neural network to enable machine vision constantly update in real-time. This technology is what allows filters on platforms like Snapchat to achieve incredible precision, and it's likely that this operational framework will further evolve to enrich our AR experiences.

The capabilities of generative AI stand to propel the efficiency and innovation of augmented reality technology forward at a significant rate. Given that the industry is still grappling with disappointing sales barriers to widespread acceptance, this breakthrough may be the turning point the AR sector has been longing for-- but what specific contributions can generative AI make to augmented reality?

What Exactly is Generative AI?

Generative AI encompasses smart algorithms capable of producing content independently based on prompts input from users. The resulting creations can be fully automated and designed algorithmically through various AI models. Remarkably, generative AI can craft art, text, and visuals entirely autonomously, without the need for human input.

The aspiration of generative AI is to leverage software that creates outputs that are entirely original yet crafted through AI, appear completely human-like in their design.

Thanks to the capacity of generative AI to produce intricate digital visuals from a human prompt it acts as a powerful asset in the development of augmented reality applications. Already, leading AR companies are eager to harness its potential:

Uniting Generative AI and AR

Snap is a noteworthy example of an augmented reality company making progress in the realm of generative AI. According to Snap's CEO Evan Spiegel, the introduction of generative AI could significantly enhance the capabilities of their cameras-- ultimately providing a boost to the overall growth of AR, including smart glasses.

As for Snap's strategy, Spiegel anticipates that generative AI will elevate the quality and definition of images taken with the Snap camera and could introduce some truly avant-garde filters.

"We’ve experienced considerable success by integrating Snap ML tools into Lens Studio, which has empowered creators to produce remarkable innovations,” he remarked. “Currently, we have 300,000 creators who have designed over 3 million lenses within Lens Studio. I believe that democratizing access to these tools will prove to be exceptionally impactful.” Spiegel explained While this is certainly an exciting prospect, it seems that Snap is particularly keen on maximizing the promising relationship between generative AI and augmented reality going forward.

"If we look towards the long-term, say five years from now… this will be foundational to the advancement of augmented reality. If you assess the current state of AR, there’s truly a constraint on what can be developed in this space due to the limited variety of 3D models created by artists,” Spiegel elaborated.

"Generative AI allows us to rapidly generate more of these 3D models, unlocking the complete potential of AR and enabling people to materialize their creativity within the real world.

As we approach the era of the metaverse, where augmented reality can merge the physical and digital realms,

it could prove to be instrumental in crafting environments that are ever-changing and dynamic, keeping users continuously engaged.  generative AI In a project by Mitacs titled 'Generative AI for Dynamic Environment Creation in VR & AR', developers employed advancements in AI to construct 2D environments to enhance and

guide the algorithmic generation technique. By enabling the AI to adapt and learn from this guidance, the initiative will facilitate the creation of customized environments tailored to the requirements of digital media production.  This will lead to a feature of 'limitless' content, a capability that can be considerably more challenging for human creators to achieve in expansive augmented reality landscapes.  Given that generative AI can analyze and understand its surroundings, AR glass users can benefit from software that recognizes their location, the interactive elements around them, and their personal preferences. This enables the crafting of engaging games and landscapes that transform everyday activities into captivating experiences.

With cloud integration, it’s likely that augmented reality glasses won’t require bulky external devices for operation. In the future, we might witness headsets mimicking the sleek design of iconic brands such as Flexon and other respected designers.

Although we might still be quite a few years away from achieving the perfect fusion of generative AI and augmented reality, where both functionality and a continuous flow of innovative content align seamlessly, the prospects for this dynamic partnership appear very promising.

Because these generative AI models Despite the challenges faced by augmented reality eyewear in gaining a foothold in the market recently, generative AI presents an opportunity to significantly elevate easier the user experience, likely propelling the technology to new heights. Coupled with the progressive emergence of the metaverse, we are on the brink of a significant revival for the AR eyewear industry.
