What is the concept behind xAI? It's Elon Musk’s latest initiative designed to compete directly with OpenAI's offerings.

In Brief

xAI represents a new artificial intelligence enterprise co-founded by the well-known tech guru Elon Musk.

At this moment, the xAI team comprises 12 talented members, including Elon Musk himself, Igor Babuschkin, Manuel Kroiss, Yuhuai (Tony) Wu, Christian Szegedy, Jimmy Ba, Toby Pohlen, Ross Nordeen, Kyle Kosic, Greg Yang, Guodong Zhang, and Zihang Dai. Additionally, Dan Hendrycks serves as an advisor for the company.

This burgeoning company could potentially emerge as a significant competitor to ChatGPT, the AI chatbot sensation released by OpenAI on November 30, 2022.

On July 12, the renowned tech mogul Elon Musk took to the internet to announce the birth of his new artificial intelligence firm, xAI.

What is xAI? Elon Musk’s New AI Company

What is xAI?

Earlier in March, Musk registered xAI in Nevada. Following this, in April, he was reported to have made a substantial investment in Nvidia GPU processors, which are essential for running large-scale language models. This purchase hinted at his ambitions for creating an AI-oriented enterprise. On July 12, Musk unveiled announced the creation of xAI via a tweet. According to his message, the organization's goal is to delve into the fundamental nature of the universe.

OpenAI Rival

It's worth mentioning that xAI isn't Musk's first endeavor into the AI landscape. He co-founded OpenAI back in 2015 alongside its current CEO. Sam Altman and Ilya Sutskever. However, in 2018, Musk stepped down from the OpenAI board due to potential conflicts arising from Tesla's advancements in AI. His perspectives also diverged from those of Altman. After parting ways with OpenAI, Musk famously referred to the organization as a 'profit-maximizing demon from hell.'

Interestingly, Elon Musk, along with a group of investors, initially contributed around $1 billion to support OpenAI.

It's essential to note that xAI may soon become a formidable opponent to ChatGPT, which became immensely popular after its launch by OpenAI on November 30, 2022.

Team

On July 12, Elon Musk shared A comprehensive overview of xAI’s twelve-member team, which includes Elon Musk.

Musk is not only a co-founder of xAI but also occupies the roles of CEO at Tesla and SpaceX. Before venturing into xAI, he established a tunnel construction business known as the Boring Company and X Corp. His entrepreneurial journey includes co-founding Neuralink—a company focused on neurotechnology—Zip2, which developed online city guide solutions, and OpenAI itself. In 1999, Musk co-created the online banking platform X.com, which later merged with Continuity Inc. and was rebranded as PayPal. In 2002, eBay acquired PayPal for a whopping $1.5 billion.

Igor Babuschkin serves as a research engineer concentrating on AI systems. He was previously employed at DeepMind from 2017 until 2020. His website, linked through his Twitter profile—which appears outdated—claims that he is currently affiliated with 'OpenAI in San Francisco.' Igor's academic background includes studying physics at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN before transitioning into deep learning.

Manuel Kroiss is someone who has worked as a software engineer at both Google and DeepMind.

Yuhuai (Tony) Wu boasts past experience with Google N2Formal, with a keen interest in creating machines capable of reasoning. He has achieved a Postdoc from Stanford and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto.

Christian Szegedy is a specialized research scientist in deep learning and AI. His previous experience includes over 12 years at Google, where his roles ranged from software engineer to senior and staff research scientist. Szegedy earned a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from The University of Bonn.

Jimmy Ba is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto's Computer Science Department, where his work centers on developing efficient learning algorithms for deep neural networks. His long-term research aim is to tackle the computational question: 'How can we create general problem-solving machines that mirror human efficiency and adaptability?' Dr. Ba achieved his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto, studying under the renowned Geoffrey Hinton, often dubbed as the 'godfather of AI.'

Toby Pohlen works as a research engineer and devoted over six years to Google DeepMind. He holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science from RWTH Aachen University.

Ross Nordeen previously held the position of technical program manager within Tesla’s machine learning and supercomputing division, under Elon Musk’s leadership.

Kyle Kosic is recognized as a full-stack site reliability engineer and has an extensive background in mathematics. He has worked with OpenAI as a technical staff member as well as a Machine Learning and DevOps software engineer at OnScale. Kyle earned his Master’s degree in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. data scientist Greg Yang is a mathematician and has served as a senior researcher at Microsoft Research. Presently, he is developing a framework called 'Tensor Programs' to enhance our understanding of large neural networks. Greg obtained a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Harvard University.

Regarding his views on xAI, Greg Yang shared on Twitter, 'The math behind deep learning is not only profound but also remarkably effective. My objective is to develop a 'theory of everything' for large neural networks, which will be pivotal in elevating AI to new heights. In return, this AI will empower us to comprehend our mathematical universe in unprecedented ways.'

Guodong Zhang is delving into the world of machine learning and artificial intelligence, emphasizing the training, tuning, and alignment of large language models. His prior experience encompasses roles as a researcher at both DeepMind and Google Brain, where he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto's Computer Science Department.

wrote Zihang Dai is a former research scientist associated with Google Brain. He holds a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science.

Dan Hendrycks acts as an advisor for xAI, also leading the Center for AI Safety and contributing as a researcher in machine learning.

The landing page for xAI clarifies that the company operates independently from X Corp., which was also registered in March this year in Nevada. Simultaneously, xAI plans to collaborate closely with Musk’s Tesla and X (formerly Twitter), which were integrated into X Corp. in April after Musk acquired the social media giant for $44 billion in March 2023. X Corp. remains a fully owned subsidiary of X Holdings Corp., controlled by Elon Musk.

The official website for xAI indicates that the organization will seek collaborations with other entities to realize its objectives.
