The Web Summit in Lisbon is facing potential cancellation due to Israel's withdrawal prompted by the CEO's controversial remarks about Hamas.
In Brief
The risk of cancellation looms over the Web Summit in Lisbon following Israel's decision to pull out because of remarks by CEO Cosgrave that were perceived as pro-Hamas.

This is due to comments attributed to Paddy Cosgrave, the co-founder and Executive of the conference, which he made about the ongoing tension between Israel and Palestine. This incident showcases the escalating controversy surrounding the event. Web Summit in Lisbon Originally set to take place from November 13 to 16, the Web Summit is now at risk of being canceled altogether as more companies choose to withdraw from joining.
Ambassador Shapira highlighted that Paddy Cosgrave's recent public comments, deemed as 'outrageous', played a significant role in this decision. He criticized the actions of Western political figures in relation to the conflict.
On a recent post on X, Cosgrave conveyed his shock at how Western leaders have been responding to the conflict, while expressing praise for the approach taken by the government of Ireland.
He stated, 'War crimes cannot just be ignored when they are carried out by allies—they must be called out,' emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
Later on, he expressed strong disapproval of Hamas’s actions, describing them as horrific and emphasizing Israel's right to self-defense, albeit within the confines of international law.
Cosgrave's comments sparked considerable outrage, leading many firms within the tech sector to reevaluate their participation in the summit. His efforts to clarify later, including condolences for civilian casualties on both sides, have done little to alleviate the ongoing controversy surrounding the event.
Today, I reached out to the Mayor of Lisbon to express my views regarding the conference in light of CEO Paddy Cosgrave's troubling statements.
It pains me to have once regarded you in a positive light...
