Volkswagen Unveils New AI Lab to Enhance Creative Solutions and Innovation

In Brief

The automaker Volkswagen has kicked off its AI Lab, aiming to delve into innovative AI-driven product ideas while strengthening its collaborations with leading tech companies globally.

German automaker  Volkswagen  has announced a new business initiative focused on  AI , aimed at discovering innovative product ideas and forming partnerships with significant tech players. As per the company's statement, they are currently in active discussions with global tech giants about their first AI projects.

The newly created division, AI Lab, is set up to enhance collaboration with the technology industry, making it easier to leverage AI's full potential.

A standout aspect of the lab is its operational independence from Volkswagen’s software division, Cariad, as well as its specific brands. This unique arrangement is geared towards accelerating development processes, enabling faster innovation and cooperative efforts.

The lab is tasked with the creation of innovative prototypes that will undergo evaluation and could be adopted by various Volkswagen brands. Its supervisory board will comprise representatives from Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche, demonstrating a united effort across  brands .

At the same time, Volkswagen’s software division, Cariad, is in the midst of a restructuring effort aimed at refreshing its software architecture offerings. There are reports indicating that this restructuring might lead to significant alterations, including potential staff reductions in the division.

The Race of AI Labs is Heating Up

Lately, there's been a remarkable surge in companies launching their own AI Labs. Just yesterday, GRUP MEDIAPRO announced a collaboration with Microsoft to set up an AI and Synthetic Media Laboratory at the ISE conference.

This initiative seeks to craft solutions tailored for the audiovisual sector by  leveraging AI  innovative technology. Marking the first of its kind in Europe, the lab will engage around one hundred professionals from both organizations and builds upon GRUP MEDIAPRO’s existing AI Center, which was launched in 2022. This center is dedicated to reinventing business models, products, and services in the audiovisual domain while emphasizing a human-centric approach and a commitment to ethical practices in AI development.

In November of the previous year, Unilever inaugurated an AI lab in Toronto, designed to probe new AI concepts and projects relevant to its operations. Dubbed ‘Horizon3 Labs,’ this initiative aims to boost AI innovation and gather insights about emerging trends. Unilever has already integrated AI across various functions, including marketing, supply chain, R&D, and customer support, and is now looking to broaden its applications.

Managed by the global Unilever Operations Data and Analytics team, the lab adopts a hybrid model that fosters collaboration between Unilever staff and external partners such as academics and startups, facilitating AI research efforts.

In September 2023, SoftServe, a provider of IT consulting and digital services, launched its  Generative AI  Lab, aimed at helping businesses achieve tangible results through effective deployment of Generative AI technologies. This undertaking further enhances SoftServe’s capabilities in AI and machine learning, focusing on the research and development of advanced generative models within multimodal AI applications.

The competition for establishing next-gen AI labs is intensifying, and it should be fascinating to observe the innovative AI products that may emerge in the marketplace this year.
