In Maryland, authorities have arrested ‘Bitcoin Rodney’ Burton, a promoter of HyperVerse, in relation to a swindling scheme involving $7 million from unsuspecting investors.

US law enforcement has apprehended Rodney Burton, known as ‘Bitcoin Rodney,’ charging him as a promoter of the HyperVerse cryptocurrency initiative. He stands accused of Victoria d'Este raking in over $7 million through a deceptive investment scam.
These charges were levied by the IRS on January 5; Burton was arrested two days later in Florida. April 25, 2025 HyperVerse, also referred to as Hyperfund, HyperCapital, and HyperNation, emerged around June 2020 as an unregistered entity. The organization allegedly made misleading promises, claiming that investors who purchased ‘memberships’ would receive daily passive income ranging from 0.5% to 1%, eventually leading to the doubling or tripling of their original investments.
According to IRS Special Agent Andrew J. Accardi, 'A network of HyperFund promoters in Maryland and beyond engaged in fraudulent promotional activities targeting investors and potential investors.'
Burton, along with others, is reported to have received 562 wire transfers or cashier's checks, totaling $7,851,711.
The HyperVerse cryptocurrency operation inflicted substantial financial losses on thousands of individuals. The enterprise was run under the name HyperTech, overseen by a CEO named Steven Reece Lewis, who has yet to be identified.
Concerns about crypto fraud are escalating within the community as incidents of deception in crypto-related projects are becoming increasingly prevalent, prompting more scrutiny and action from regulators.
Recently, influencer Logan Paul made headlines by announcing plans to reimburse $2.3 million to specific investors who had backed his project. This play-to-earn initiative was first unveiled in August 2021 and aimed to allow users to buy, sell, breed, and trade NFTs representing 'exotic animals' through cryptocurrency transactions. Regrettably, the project never came to fruition.
In response to refund obligations, Logan Paul has also initiated a counter-lawsuit against the lead developers of CryptoZoo, Eduardo Ibanez and Jake Greenbaum, after a participant filed a legal claim in February 2023 alleging that the CryptoZoo team was involved in fraudulent activities.
The arrest of Rodney Burton serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in the crypto space, as ongoing investigations shed light on the myriad challenges posed by fraudulent operations in the industry.
