UK Commits £1 Million to 'AI for Development' Initiative at UN General Assembly

To achieve this vision, the UK plans to launch the 'AI for Development' initiative in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. This announcement aligns with the UK's efforts to co-host discussions on AI during the UN General Assembly's supplementary events. The government emphasizes that the Foreign Secretary's involvement is part of a broader strategy to shape the international discourse surrounding AI.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will preside over the event, which will convene government officials, technology companies, and nonprofit organizations to evaluate how AI can expedite advancements towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

As stated by the UK Government, these objectives aim to transform our world into a healthier, fairer, and more prosperous place by the year 2030.

"The potential of AI is colossal. It has already demonstrated its ability to accelerate drug discovery, develop new treatments for widespread illnesses, and predict food shortages – just to name a few of its applications,\" asserted Foreign Secretary James Cleverly. \"The UK, in alliance with our partners, is ensuring that this significant potential is recognized and harnessed worldwide.\"

On November 1 and 2, the UK will host a pivotal global event at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire. The summit aims to forge an international agreement on the essential measures necessary to prioritize safety within AI advancements.

"As AI technology rapidly progresses, it is crucial that we adopt a global strategy that maximizes the potential benefits of AI in addressing humanity's common challenges. The AI summit we are hosting in November will play a vital role in achieving this objective,\" added Foreign Secretary James Cleverly. AI Safety Summit The announcement includes updates regarding the selection of AI industry leaders for the advisory board of the UK's Frontier AI Taskforce. This initiative, announced by the Prime Minister back in April, has been allocated £100 million to promote the responsible development of cutting-edge AI technologies.

In the upcoming months, the Taskforce intends to enhance its abilities to explore new applications for AI within public services and to strengthen the UK's overall AI capabilities.
