U.S. Senator Probes Tech Giants' Strategies to Combat Misinformation Amid the Israel-Hamas Situation
In Brief
U.S. Senator Michael Bennet has initiated an investigation focusing on how key tech players like Meta, TikTok, X, and Google are tackling misleading content related to the Israel-Hamas conflict on their platforms.

Senator Michael Bennet is investigating These leading tech companies, including Meta, TikTok, X, and Google, are grappling with deceptive information connected to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Misleading visuals from earlier conflicts and video game footage have inundated social media, raising alarms about the rapid dissemination of false information.
In a letter directed at the CEOs of these influential companies, Senator Bennet expressed his concerns regarding how algorithms contribute to the spread of misleading content and pointed out the inadequate responses from these platforms. He has asked a series of questions about their practices in content moderation, requesting that they respond by October 31.
"Since the outbreak of the conflict, misleading content has been circulating on social media platforms, often garnering millions of views,\" Bennet stated in his communication.
As reported by Reuters, social media platforms have detailed recent initiatives in response to the crisis. For instance, TikTok has brought in additional moderators fluent in Arabic and Hebrew. Meanwhile, Meta disclosed that it has either removed or marked as disturbing more than 795,000 pieces of content in Hebrew or Arabic in the initial three days following the Hamas attack. Both X and YouTube, owned by Google, also confirmed that they have taken down harmful materials.
Even with some announced measures to address misinformation, Bennet argues that these efforts are insufficient. He is particularly critical of the layoffs of trust and safety personnel responsible for monitoring false content. He believes that the decisions made by these companies contribute to a global climate rife with mistrust, violence, and suspicion, where reliable information is often overshadowed by unreliable sources.
