ChatGPT App Surpasses Half a Million Downloads Within Just a Week
In Brief
OpenAI's ChatGPT app for iOS users in the U.S. has reached an impressive milestone of over 500,000 downloads within just six days of its release.

On May 18, OpenAI’s AI-driven chatbot ChatGPT made its debut launched in the Apple Store. The app experienced a remarkable launch despite being initially available only to U.S. iOS users, with plans to expand to 11 additional countries soon.
As reported by an app intelligence firm, data.ai the application garnered half a million downloads within just six days post-launch. This achievement places it among the top-performing new app releases of this and the last year, only trailing behind the launch of Twitter’s Truth Social alternative in February 2022.
The surging popularity of AI chatbots led to a flood of third-party apps in the App Store labeled ‘ChatGPT’ or ‘AI chatbot.’ Many of these are mere copies attempting to entice users into expensive subscription models for accessing their artificial intelligence tools. Nevertheless, a few standout applications attracted millions of downloads. Given this crowded marketplace, one might have expected the official ChatGPT app to face difficulties in gaining traction. However, that was not the case.
The official ChatGPT app outperformed many rivals, including Microsoft’s Bing and Edge applications. It's worth noting that both of these apps initially integrated GPT-4 technology. In its launch week, OpenAI's ChatGPT app commanded attention, amassing 480,000 downloads in its first five days in the U.S., while only being available on iOS.
While ChatGPT served as a highly effective promotional tool for Bing and Microsoft Edge—gathering a combined total of 340,000 downloads across both iOS and Android—OpenAI's ChatGPT easily eclipsed these figures with its 480,000 downloads within the first five days of its iOS-only release.
When comparing downloads, ChatGPT's 480,000 installs far surpassed Bing’s 250,000 and Edge’s 195,000. Additionally, ChatGPT continued to widen its lead with 180,000 installations compared to Bing’s 125,000 and Edge’s 150,000.
