Sui Raises the Bar for Blockchain Transaction Speeds

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, May 21st, 2024, Chainwire

Launching on Mainnet this coming summer, Sui's Mysticeti protocol remarkably reduces consensus latency to an impressive 390 milliseconds.

Sui, an innovative Layer 1 blockchain known for its top-tier efficiency and limitless horizontal scaling, has proudly announced the successful launch of its latest consensus mechanism, Mysticeti, on the Sui Testnet. This remarkable development has slashed consensus time on Sui's public Testnet by a staggering 80 percent to just 390 milliseconds without compromising on the protocol's leading throughput. This achievement firmly establishes Sui as the fastest consensus layer available.

Mysticeti, built on extensive research into Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) consensus models, marks a substantial upgrade from the Narwhal-Bullshark consensus algorithms Sui deployed on its Mainnet a year prior. This upgrade not only boosts transaction speeds to unprecedented levels but also lowers CPU demands for validators. As a result, this enhancement extends Sui's exceptional low-latency performance to encompass all transaction types across its network.

Sui's distinctive object-oriented framework allows the network to handle transactions differently depending on the nature of the transaction and the objects involved. For instance, when it comes to transactions solely about 'owned objects,' such as peer-to-peer transfers, they can be executed without the need for consensus, which streamlines the process and reduces time taken. Conversely, transactions linked to shared objects—like those in marketplaces, auctions, or collaborative game assets—do necessitate consensus, which previously resulted in increased processing delays. However, Mysticeti optimizes this by implementing a refined version of BFT consensus specifically for shared object transactions. Its design minimizes communication between validators while fully leveraging network bandwidth to achieve high throughput.

"Mysticeti is a significant advancement, not only for Sui but for the entire blockchain ecosystem,\" commented George Danezis, the Co-founder and Chief Scientist of Mysten Labs, the brains behind the Sui Network and a leading figure in global BFT consensus research. \"It reduces consensus latency to what we perceive as its minimal thresholds while still delivering high capacity and low computational costs. Unique to Sui, it allows transaction processing to occur faster than consensus within the same protocol. Mysticeti exemplifies Sui's commitment to pushing the boundaries of blockchain capabilities.\"

The results observed on Testnet have been outstanding, showcasing the network's ability to finalize transactions with an 80% drop in latency compared to Narwhal. Mysticeti's enhancements significantly simplify complexity and resource utilization, enabling the Sui network to process tens of thousands of transactions per second while maintaining latencies well under a second.

These innovations are vital as Sui solidifies its status as a frontrunner in blockchain speed and scalability, ensuring a smooth experience for developers and users alike.

"The launch of Mysticeti is a testament to the successful partnership between our research team, engineers, and the validator community,\" stated Dmitri Perelman, Engineering Lead at Mysten Labs. \"The insights gained from optimizing previous consensus generations provided the groundwork and inspiration for the researchers to create this new protocol. After the initial prototype of Mysticeti demonstrated its undeniable performance edge, the engineering team embraced it completely, and we are set to roll out the next-gen consensus implementation to Mainnet with validator support within months.\"

Kevin Nelson, Co-Founder at Aftermath Finance expressed, \"With Mysticeti, Mysten has showcased that a DAG-based structure can indeed outperform current benchmarks in both consensus throughput and latency. At Aftermath, we’re thrilled to see Mysticeti making its way to the testnet and even more excited for its upcoming launch on Mainnet for our users. We are keen to leverage Mysticeti's innovative design to enhance the overall user experience on Aftermath.\"

Greg Siourounis, Managing Director of the Sui Foundation, emphasized, \"Minimizing latency and achieving rapid transaction speeds have always been core aspects of Sui's appeal to developers. With Mysticeti, we're elevating the developer experience even further. This milestone reinforces our continuous drive for innovation, opening up new avenues for the types and quality of decentralized applications that can be developed on Sui.\"

The groundbreaking features of Mysticeti are elaborated upon in the newly released paper titled, \" Mysticeti: Low-Latency DAG Consensus with Fast Commit Path \", which outlines the scalability potential of this cutting-edge technology and is currently available for review.
