The Chinese entertainment powerhouse StepVR has crafted the Metaverse Gate, aka the 'VR Gates to the Metaverse' or Gates01. This remarkable device permits individuals to traverse between reality and virtual environments within an open-air enclosure.

The VR Gates deliver an incredibly lifelike virtual experience, engaging all five senses: sight, sound, touch, aroma, and the sense of motion and balance. The 2.5 square meter (27 square foot) equipment stimulates the senses while allowing users to navigate a treadmill, simulating the feeling of walking in a virtual landscape. This gives users the opportunity to not only enjoy entertainment within VR, but also to work and socialize.

The founder of StepVR, Guo Cheng,  said In light of their sophisticated technology, the company perceives Meta's Oculus headset as merely a basic 'toy,' touting their own creation as 'the most immersive VR experience' that allows users to feel a boundless VR environment right from their homes. However, it's noteworthy that these gates are quite substantial, making them suited primarily for larger living spaces.

In a  press release Last month, Guo pointed out that various VR headsets could induce motion sickness, as they often fail to recreate the vestibular sense—which is vital for maintaining balance and free movement in virtual settings.

Guo mentioned, 'Entertainment and education are fundamental pillars of the Metaverse. Our aim is to create the next generation of devices for home computer systems that will follow the smartphone revolution.' SCMP

According to Guo, it might take an additional five to ten years for VR technology to reach the same level of sophistication as Apple’s smartphone ecosystem.

StepVR plans to launch Gates01 across Japan, South Korea, the Middle East, Europe, and North America, with the expected retail price set between $2,000 and $2,500. SCMP reports that it took nearly nine years for the team to bring this futuristic device to fruition.
