This decision comes on the heels of Reddit's recent announcement that it will start requiring payment for access to its data API. According to Reddit's CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman, these companies will now need to financially contribute to use Reddit’s data, with new fees starting in June. This mandates that anyone who utilizes this content must provide proper attribution. He added that AI companies often struggle to recognize each member of the community whose contributions were used, thus violating the license terms.
He mentioned that Stack Overflow will specifically charge only those companies utilizing data for creating large LLMs with commercial intentions. Alongside that, Stack Overflow is advancing its own generative AI projects as part of its overall strategy in this field.
