The South China Morning Post achieves a remarkable feat by selling its initial historical NFT collection in a mere two-hour timeframe.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) is an English-language newspaper based in Hong Kong, established in 1903 during the British colonial period. Over the decades, the Post has diligently chronicled significant events pertaining to Hong Kong, China, and wider Asia.
SCMP is not just a traditional news outlet; it embraces advancements in technology and is actively developing a \"historical NFT ecosystem.\" On March 14, the newspaper unveiled its first NFT collection, part one, which spotlights archival content from 1997—an exceptionally pivotal year for Hong Kong's history. Remarkably, all NFTs sold out within a short span of two hours.
The 1997 Premium Series NFT collection showcases iconic front pages from January 1 to July 1 of that transformative year. Each purchase included 1,300 mystery boxes, each containing five random artifacts recounting key events such as Hong Kong's handover from British to Chinese sovereignty, the Avian flu crisis, the passing of Deng Xiaoping and Princess Diana, and the Asian Financial Crisis, among others. included \"We are thrilled by the positive reception to our inaugural NFT release, which highlights the eagerness to preserve historical narratives on the blockchain. This represents a promising beginning, and we're committed to leveraging this momentum to cultivate a global community of history collectors,\" said a spokesperson.
SCMP initially announced its NFT initiative in July 2021, adopting Artifact as its blockchain metadata standard for historical NFTs. The newspaper envisions bringing together various stakeholders in historical preservation—such as media houses, cultural and academic institutions, art galleries, museums, research centers, auction firms, and government entities—to tokenize valuable assets using Artifact. said the newspaper’s CEO Gary Liu.
Furthermore, SCMP intends to create an NFT marketplace that focuses specifically on historical digital collectibles.
The Sandbox is welcoming Hong Kong businesses like Standard Chartered and Regal Hotels into the Metaverse.
