Sorare joins forces with MLB to introduce an NFT fantasy baseball experience

Major League Baseball has officially partnered with Sorare, a developer in the Web3 space, to launch the inaugural fantasy baseball NFT game this coming summer.

In this innovative setup, players will engage in fantasy baseball while trading and collecting NFTs of real MLB players. Although many aspects of the gameplay remain under wraps while development continues, it’s clear that Sorare’s MLB offering will deviate from conventional draft models. Rather than drafting teams, players will assemble their squads from a collection of NFT cards that depict MLB athletes, which will be distributed by Sorare upon sign-up. As players participate in matches and tournaments, they’ll earn more coveted NFT cards as rewards.

The game is set to feature its own marketplace, where users can buy and sell their Sorare player cards amongst themselves. However, due to legislation regarding gambling in the U.S. and the league’s guidelines, this MLB NFT game will not adopt a play-to-earn (P2E) model, meaning participants won’t win cash rewards for their player NFTs.

The unique focus of this company is to revolutionize fan engagement through a blend of sports, technology, and gaming, allowing fans to truly possess a slice of the game they adore. This initiative transcends geographical boundaries, enabling a broader audience to experience the passion for baseball worldwide,”  said  MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.

The Paris-based game development firm is well-known for its successful play-to-earn soccer fantasy game, showcasing a community of over 1.8 million users. They've crafted soccer experiences for various leagues across the globe, including the prestigious German Bundesliga, Copa America, and Major League Soccer.

“Sorare has built a new baseball a gaming experience that will thrill fans by enabling them to collect player NFTs, create top-tier lineups, and engage in competitions with fellow baseball enthusiasts from all corners of the globe,” stated Tony Clark, executive director of the MLB Player Association.  John Legend’s NFT platform, ‘Oursong’, successfully garnered $7.5 million during its seed funding round.
