Funds amounting to 0.1 ETH are being sent to significant wallets through the U.S.-prohibited Tornado Cash service.
On August 9, right after the Tornado Cash ban by the U.S. government, an anonymous user began transferring 0.1 ETH to notable wallets. ban This action, which might appear to be a joke, could expose the wallet holders to severe legal consequences, including potential prison sentences ranging from 10 to 30 years and fines reaching up to $10 million.
With Tornado Cash being added to the OFAC list on August 8, all Ethereum wallet addresses linked to the service have been placed under the Cyber-related Designation sanctions. As a result, around $437 million worth of assets have been frozen.
In light of the sanctions, any engagement with Tornado Cash's addresses is deemed illegal for U.S. citizens, residents, and entities. This includes actions such as donating on Gitcoin, running Tornado's software, or even visiting its website.
Currently, several prominent individuals have received 0.1 ETH via Tornado Cash. This list features renowned personalities like TV host Jimmy Fallon, Coinbase's CEO Brian Armstrong, artist Beeple, DJ Steve Aoki, Logan Paul, Dave Chappelle, Shaquille O’Neal, Randi Zuckerberg, and the sportswear brand PUMA. Notably, there were also anonymous contributions made to a wallet allocated for Crypto Donations to Ukraine.
Tornado Cash has reportedly been exploited for money laundering since 2019. However, not every user has deployed the mixer for illicit activities. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin tweeted about how he utilized Tornado Cash to make donations to Ukraine, aiming to safeguard the financial privacy of the recipients.
