Roblox Showcases Noteworthy Developer Earnings at RDC 2023, Spanning from $27 Million to $60,000
In Brief
In an impressive statistic, Roblox disclosed that its creators collectively raked in an astounding $680 million over the year leading up to June 2023.

During this gathering of innovative thinkers at the ninth annual event, Roblox Developers Conference (RDC) held at the Fort Mason Center, Roblox, the global gaming and creative powerhouse, presented its ambitious vision for changing the way people connect socially.
Alongside this, the platform revealed impressive earnings from its developer community, a sign of ongoing growth. In the lead-up to June 2023, developers on Roblox earned a remarkable total of $680 million.
These earnings reflect a diverse range of incomes for developers, with the leading ten Roblox game creators averaging a noteworthy $27 million annually. Meanwhile, the creator ranked at 1000 still earned a solid $60,000 per year, and the 100th creator pulled in $950,000 each year, according to Roblox’s figures.
As reported, by the end of the quarter in June 2023, an astonishing 65.5 million users spent an average of 2.3 hours each day on the platform. In the previous quarter, users engaged in over 3.2 billion virtual transactions, with an additional 875 million recorded during Q2 of 2023. Roblox asserts that its economic footprint has grown so large that it now rivals the GDP of certain nations.
The company highlighted significant growth among creators and studios of various scales in 2022. Since 2020, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for monetization among the creators ranked 1000th has nearly tripled compared to the 10th position. Notably, the creator at rank 1000 earned $55,000 in 2021.
By the end of 2022, approximately 20% of the top 100 experiences on Roblox and nearly 40% of the top 5000 experiences were crafted by users.
Roblox operates on a revenue model focused on Robux, its virtual currency utilized for in-game transactions and asset purchases. In the quarter concluding in June 2023, over 4.8 million creators of virtual assets earned Robux.

In an official blog post Roblox shared that a significant 76% of all in-game expenditures is allocated directly to developers. Unlike other platforms that often pass costs like hosting, storage, customer support, localization, payment processing, and moderation onto developers, Roblox covers 47% of these expenses. This financial structure permits Roblox to distribute an average of 29% directly to developers while reserving 24% for ongoing services, operational costs, future investments, and profit margins.
Roblox credited its creators as being fundamental to its success.
Roblox Introduces Generative AI Tool 'Assistant' to Elevate Creator Experience
Along with the earnings announcement, Roblox announced the conference introduced a groundbreaking advancement in its suite of creative tools. The company unveiled 'Assistant,' a generative AI designed to simplify content creation on the platform. This tool aims to streamline the creative process for all users, from beginners to seasoned creators, enabling the rapid development of more immersive and engaging experiences.
'Assistant' is expected to be integrated into Roblox Studio and the Creator Hub later this year, with plans to bring it into in-game experiences next year. Its collaborative design will allow creators to provide input that helps steer the AI toward optimal outcomes. This state-of-the-art AI tool aims to enhance the creative potential of every user, allowing them to bring their visions to fruition more successfully.
'Assistant' builds on Roblox's existing utilization of generative AI, which notably reduces barriers for newcomers while helping established creators automate repetitive tasks and scale their projects. The company believes that such innovations will unlock a wealth of new creative possibilities, encouraging a wider range of ideas and ambitious endeavors on the platform.
Earlier this year, Roblox launched beta versions of 'Code Assist' and 'Material Generator,' both of which have reportedly gained substantial traction, based on the company's feedback.
'Since the implementation of Code Assist, we've observed a doubling in the amount of code generated compared to our prior autocomplete feature,' stated Roblox in their blog. 'Creators testing the beta for Material Generator, which allows them to create material variations using text prompts, reported over a 50% increase in their application of physics-based rendering (PBR) material variations compared to those not participating in the beta.'
Roblox continues to spearhead innovation and bolster its creative community, driving considerable growth and transformation within its platform.
