Renault unveils the first-ever industrial metaverse

In Brief

Renault Group has debuted the first industrial metaverse in history.

This ambitious project is projected to save the company around $330 million and an extra $270 million in inventory reductions by 2025.

Every factory will be represented by its digital twin in the metaverse, managed from a centralized control tower.

The renowned car manufacturer, Renault Group, has announced launched the world's pioneer automobile industrial metaverse. This latest venture is crucial to their digital evolution, designed to oversee supply chain dynamics and the flow of materials.

The industrial metaverse encompasses four key components: extensive data collection, digital replicas of manufacturing processes, an interconnected supply chain network, and a suite of cutting-edge technologies.

From an economic standpoint, the metaverse initiative is expected to deliver Renault substantial savings, with a total approximation of $600 million in overall and inventory efficiencies by 2025, while also contributing to the reduction of:

  • Vehicle delivery time by 60%.
  • The vehicle production carbon footprint by 50%.
  • Warranty costs by 60%.

To streamline data acquisition from its production facilities, Renault has developed the Industrial Data Management Platform 4.0 (IDM4.0), which consolidates industrial information on a Google Cloud platform. This data will consistently update the metaverse, enabling real-time adjustments during production.

"The Metaverse offers immediate oversight that enhances the responsiveness and flexibility of industrial processes while also improving the quality of production and the Supply Chain,\"

said  stated Jose Vicente de Los Mozos, EVP of Industry Group and head of Iberia operations.

The Renault industrial metaverse serves as a digital version of the company’s actual production locations, which are also monitored in real-time, featuring over 8,500 connected devices and tracking 90% of the supply chain flow. Each facility is mirrored in the virtual realm, overseen by a dedicated control tower. These virtual twins are fully integrated into Renault’s broader ecosystem, collaborating closely with sales estimates, supplier information, quality assurance, traffic data, and machine learning technologies.

Renault has recently joined the ranks of automotive companies venturing into the Web3 landscape. Just this past April, Japanese firms Toyota and Nissan entered the virtual domain by creating virtual work environments for their employees and launching immersive showrooms to exhibit new vehicles to clients.

In March, the German automaker Audi took an early lead in adopting virtual reality technology within its car range, providing back-seat passengers with an immersive experience through games, films, and interactive content using VR headsets.
