PlayStation Stars: a loyalty initiative offering digital collectibles instead of NFTs.

In Brief

  • PlayStation has introduced a new rewards program named 'PlayStation Stars,' which revolves around digital collectibles.
  • The program is free
  • Gamers can earn collectibles by achieving milestones in games and participating in various activities.

Among the announcements from PlayStation in last week's State of Play, Playstation Stars this initiative stands out as a significant development for the brand's most dedicated followers.

In an official video, Grace Chen, PlayStation's global marketing VP, unveiled details about PlayStation Stars—a loyalty reward program that first made its debut in June. This initiative rewards participants with themed digital collectibles that are not built on NFT technology.

Chen showcased the digital collectibles users can earn by completing various tasks and challenges. These collectibles highlight some of the brand's most beloved creations, including the PlayStation 3, PocketStation, Ape Escape 2, Toro y Kuro, and Polygon Man.

Users can join the program for free and start collecting PlayStation Stars. Collectibles are awarded for reaching specific achievements or commemorating previous milestones. Each star varies in rarity, correlating with the effort needed to acquire them. Users can proudly display their collectibles within a virtual showcase accessed through the PlayStation App.

The activities or campaigns designed to earn these collectibles will be either centered on points accumulation or based on collectible-driven tasks. One of the initial campaigns slated for PlayStation Stars is a musical challenge titled “Hit/Play 1994.”

Currently, PlayStation Stars is exclusive to the PlayStation and the PlayStation App, with digital collectibles set for future availability on consoles. The rollout begins in Asia towards the end of September, followed by launches in the Americas and Europe several weeks later.

Early in September, Starbucks In a similar fashion, another brand introduced a loyalty program for coffee enthusiasts—called Odyssey, which allows members to earn and purchase NFTs related to the renowned coffee chain.

While numerous brands venturing into the Web3 realm are incentivizing users with NFTs or cryptocurrency tokens, PlayStation distinguishes itself by opting out of this approach.
