In this insightful interview, cloudwhite shares his distinctive experience and provides valuable perspectives on the future of social interactions in the digital space, particularly as it relates to blending virtual and physical events.

What sparked the idea for your wedding to take place in Pixels? Were there particular inspirations guiding this unconventional choice?

My wife and I originally crossed paths at Axiecon in Barcelona back in 2022, which was focused on Axie Infinity. For those unfamiliar, it's another game hosted on the Ronin network, similar to Pixels. As we prepared for our wedding, we encountered some hurdles since my wife is from Colombia, necessitating a K-1 visa application.

Could you explain more about the visa process and how it shaped your decision?

The K-1 visa has an extensive waiting period of about two years, during which Colombians cannot enter the U.S. This limitation meant that her family and friends would be unable to attend our wedding in person. To bridge this gap, we came up with the idea of live streaming the ceremony for those unable to join us.

We're deeply connected with the Ronin network community. I was among the early 200 individuals collecting NFTs back in 2017 and 2018. I had the opportunity to engage with the minds behind Axie Infinity, worked at OpenSea, and played a role in cultivating community culture within the NFT arena. From launching initial art competitions to creating a tattoo reward initiative and producing music videos, my journey has been fulfilling.

Given our shared roots in this vibrant community, it felt completely natural to involve them in our special day.

Could you share what the planning process looked like? Were there any unforeseen challenges or surprises as you organized your in-game wedding?

Simultaneously, we hosted a traditional wedding that we streamed. As for setting up the Pixels ceremony, the process was quite straightforward. I met with the Pixels team a couple of times to coordinate the in-game events. A friend of ours, a veteran game streamer with a background in esports, provided all the necessary streaming equipment.

It blended seamlessly with our everyday lives. In fact, it took only two brief meetings—each lasting about half an hour—to finalize everything. The entire experience was incredibly manageable.

Were there any standout moments during your wedding that you’d like to highlight, for both the traditional and virtual ceremonies?

My goal has always been to cultivate a sense of culture within NFT communities, and it was heartwarming to witness participants take the initiative. For example, before the wedding, there was a lively bachelor party at the Drunken Goose in the game that the community organized entirely on their own. It was fantastic to see not just our community come together but also actively contribute with various side events.

What are your thoughts on the future of dating and weddings within Web3 games? Do you foresee this becoming a more common trend?

Having a relationship with Lara felt entirely organic, considering how tightly-knit the NFT and Web3 communities are compared to other social circles. With both of us deeply immersed in the Web3 culture, it was a natural match. I believe that opportunities for real-world interactions at conferences or gatherings can foster connections as digital natives are naturally inclined to seek one another out.

People outside our community often struggle to grasp what we're about; there's a general misunderstanding surrounding cryptocurrency, and NFT communities are even more opaque. Thus, if you have a passion for this space, it's likely you'll encounter others who share your enthusiasm.

How can you use NFTs for a web3 wedding? 

We were fortunate enough for Pixels to create custom suits and dresses for our wedding celebration, allowing guests to participate in our digital nuptials. Additionally, we had a virtual ring exchange ceremony, although I didn't have a real NFT ring—though that’s an interesting idea I might explore further!

Reflecting on your experience, how do you foresee the connection between real-life relationships and virtual world interactions evolving in the coming years?

This digital evolution expands our horizons. Looking back a hundred years, dating preferences were primarily confined to local communities. Being part of these virtual environments gives us the freedom to connect with potential partners beyond our immediate surroundings.

Of course, challenges like the K-1 visa process and the financial hurdles associated with long-distance relationships must be acknowledged. Nevertheless, platforms like these open up new possibilities for meaningful connections.

What advice would you offer to couples who are considering a wedding in a Web3 game?

Prepare for your intimate moments being witnessed by a vast audience. We had nearly 3,000 viewers tuning into our live stream, leading to an explosion of screenshots and online sharing. So, if you prefer discretion, hosting your nuptials in such a public setting may not be ideal. However, if you're comfortable with the spotlight, you should find it a delightful experience.
