Renowned for pioneering advances in optical character recognition and computer vision, Yann LeCun is particularly famous for his development of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). He's often regarded as a primary architect of these networks and also played a key role in creating the DjVu format for image compression alongside Léon Bottou and Patrick Haffner. Moreover, he collaborated with Bottou to develop the Lush programming language. In recognition of his contributions to deep learning, he was jointly awarded the prestigious Turing Award in 2018 along with Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton.
Since joining Facebook in 2013, Yann has taken on the role of Chief AI Scientist at Facebook AI Research (FAIR). Besides his responsibilities at Meta, he is also a Silver Professor at New York University, closely affiliated with the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the NYU Center for Data Science.
Yann earned his PhD in computer science in 1987 from Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, alongside an engineering diploma from ESIEE Paris. He began his career at AT&T Bell Laboratories after completing a postdoc at the University of Toronto. After a brief stint as a Fellow at NEC Research Institute, he became the director of the Image Processing Research Department at AT&T Labs-Research in 1996. By 2003, he had accepted a professorship at NYU, and from 2012 to 2014, he led the NYU Center for Data Science. Alongside Yoshua Bengio, he co-directs the CIFAR program focused on neural computation and adaptive perception.
In addition to being a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), Yann is inducted into the US National Academy of Engineering and honored with honorary doctorates from esteemed institutions like IPN Mexico and EPFL. His accolades also include the University of Pennsylvania’s Pender Award and several prestigious recognitions such as the IEEE Neural Network Pioneer Award in 2014, the IEEE Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence Distinguished Researcher Award in 2015, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Lovie in 2016.
