The DistributedArtificial Intelligence The Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR) was established by Timnit Gebru, who plays a crucial role as its executive director. Previously, she parted ways with Google in December 2020 after raising concerns about discrimination in the workplace while co-leading their Ethical AI team. Timnit completed her PhD at Stanford and later served as a postdoctoral fellow in the FATE group at Microsoft Research in New York City, specializing in algorithmic bias and the ethical implications of data-driven technologies. She also sits on the board of AddisCoder and co-founded Black in AI, a nonprofit focused on amplifying the visibility and inclusion of Black professionals in the AI field.
Turkopticon, along with the Distributed AI Research Institute, expressed their gratitude as Senator Markey (D-Mass.) and Representative Jayapal (WA-07) circulated a letter to Congress demanding accountability from major tech companies like Amazon, Google, and OpenAI concerning the working conditions faced by data workers. This letter highlights the precarious nature of these jobs, characterized by meager wages, relentless surveillance, arbitrary dismissals, and psychological stress stemming from poor working environments, substantiated by significant research from Turkopticon and DAIR.
Krystal Kauffman, the main organizer for Turkopticon, remarked that this initiative represents a meaningful advance in resisting the exploitative practices typically associated with corporations like Amazon, Google, and OpenAI, who often benefit at the expense of their workers. She pointed out the questionable labor tactics employed by these tech giants, particularly regarding underpaid labor forces. Turkopticon has engaged in a struggle against Amazon, tackling its method of mass rejections, whereby workers' submissions are systematically dismissed without payment while the data remains with the company. Although it's encouraging to witness congressional representatives advocating for these workers, Amazon's reluctance to engage in addressing the issue is concerning.
