The potential benefits of AI are vast, ranging from enhanced healthcare services to cleaner transportation systems and more efficient manufacturing processes.
The European Commission has put forth an ambitious proposal to establish the first regulatory framework for AI within the EU. This framework involves assessing various AI applications based on their associated risks to users. The degree of regulatory oversight will correspond to the severity of these risks. If these proposed regulations are enacted, they will mark a historic milestone in AI legislation.
Parliament’s priority The primary objective is to ensure AI systems operating within the EU are safe, transparent, traceable, free of bias, and sustainable. Furthermore, these systems should be governed by human oversight rather than relying solely on automated processes to mitigate adverse effects. Additionally, there is a drive to create a uniform, technology-agnostic definition of AI that could apply to future advancements in the field.
On 14 June 2023, MEPs adopted The European Parliament is currently finalizing its position regarding the AI Act. Discussions will progress with member states within the Council to shape the law's ultimate form. The target is to achieve consensus by the end of the current year. Recently, a broad agreement was reached among the European Commission, European Parliament, and 27 member states on the regulations governing artificial intelligence systems. This significant step brings them closer to formalizing the European Union's AI Act.
