In a conversation with Axios’ Ina Fried at the AI+ Summit in Washington, D.C., she remarked, 'While the media and legislators focus on the looming existential threats posed by AI, they are neglecting tangible harms already affecting individuals today.'
She emphasized that people have already faced dire consequences due to flaws in AI systems, including wrongful imprisonment or being denied critical medical resources. Quoting Vice President Kamala Harris from earlier this month at the UK AI summit, she pointed out that these concerns are profoundly serious for those impacted. Chowdhury criticized the technology sector for its ongoing failure to incorporate diverse perspectives in product development, describing a troubling return to a male-dominated culture reminiscent of technology’s past.
Chowdhury noted that recent boardroom shifts following the latest actions by OpenAI have resulted in the departure of two female executives while bringing in Larry Summers, who is known for his dismissive views on women in science—a viewpoint he notably held during his tenure as Harvard’s President.
