As the Executive Vice President and Director of Studies at CNAS, Paul Scharre has garnered attention for his critically acclaimed book *Four Battlegrounds: Power in the Age of*.Artificial Intelligence His debut book, *Army of None: Autonomous Weapons and the Future of War*, received high praise, making it to Bill Gates’ list of favorite reads in 2018 and The Economist’s recommended reads for understanding modern warfare, alongside winning the 2019 Colby Award.
In his previous role within the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Scharre was a key player in shaping policies on unmanned and autonomous systems, pushing for the development of advanced weaponry. He led a working group that crafted the DoD Directive 3000.09, which established autonomy regulations for weapon systems, and guided initiatives on directed energy technology and intelligence operations. Moreover, he was involved in drafting significant planning documents like the 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review and the 2012 Defense Strategic Guidance.
Once a leader within a special operations reconnaissance unit in the Army's 3rd Ranger Battalion, Scharre made numerous trips to Iraq and Afghanistan before joining the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He took part in the prestigious Ranger Indoctrination Program, graduating with honors, and completed the Army’s rigorous Airborne, Ranger, and Sniper Schools.
Recognizing the upheaval brought about by the rise of AI, the CNAS convened a Task Force that brought together national security leaders and AI experts. This diverse group, consisting of top academics, business figures, and former officials, examined how the U.S. can tackle the security challenges that AI presents.
This Task Force operated from 2018 until 2023, forming part of CNAS's broader initiative focused on Artificial Intelligence and Global Security over several years.
The emergence of AI in 2024 is set to revolutionize healthcare, with innovations like AlphaFold 3 and Med-Gemini leading the way, redefining everything from genetic research to robotic surgery.
