His scientific pursuits range from the precise study of cosmology to exploring the very fabric of reality itself, topics beautifully detailed in his widely acclaimed book, 'Our Mathematical Universe.' With a reputation as 'Mad Max' thanks to his unique perspectives and adventurous nature, he also holds a professorship at MIT. With more than 200 academic works to his name, he has made notable contributions to movies on science and garnered recognition for his research on galaxy clustering with the SDSS collaboration, earning honors as Science magazine’s ‘Breakthrough of the Year’ in 2003. Together with Anthony Aguirre, he founded the Foundational Questions Institute.
In January 2023, a Swedish publication, Expo, revealed that the Future of Life Institute had initially offered a $100,000 donation to a foundation linked with a far-right online outlet called Nya Dagbladet. Tegmark promptly stated that the funding offer had been withdrawn as soon as the Institute learned about Nya Dagbladet’s controversial viewpoint, which became apparent only months after the donation was approved.
In March 2023, the Future of Life Institute published an open letter titled 'Pause Giant AI Experiments.' They urged major AI developers to impose a verifiable six-month moratorium on systems exceeding the capabilities of GPT-4 to establish adequate safety protocols. The letter argued that recent times reflected a reckless competition among AI labs to create increasingly potent digital intelligences that even their creators cannot comprehend, anticipate, or manage reliably. It warned of a potential historic shift in the evolution of life on Earth, citing risks like AI-generated misinformation, human redundancy, and a societal loss of control.
This petition garnered the attention of several prominent figures, including Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Evan Sharp, Chris Larsen, Gary Marcus, Connor Leahy, Emad Mostaque, lawmaker Andrew Yang, AI expert Yoshua Bengio, and historian Yuval Noah Harari. Gary Marcus noted, 'While the intention is commendable, the letter isn't without flaws.' Emad Mostaque expressed mixed feelings, noting, 'I’m not entirely on board with a six-month hiatus, although there are some noteworthy points in the letter.' Conversely, Yoshua Bengio publicly endorsed the proposed moratorium, while Elon Musk remarked, 'Top AI developers are unlikely to heed this warning, but at least the message has been conveyed.' The motivation for many signatories, Musk included, centered around genuine fears regarding the existential risks posed by advanced artificial intelligence.
The Future of Life Institute's letter faced criticism from the authors of an influential paper titled 'On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big?' Emily M. Bender, Timnit Gebru, and Margaret Mitchell responded by suggesting that the letter presented priorities and narratives in AI that, while beneficial to FLI's supporters, glossed over many dubious concepts. They remarked on the need for addressing pressing issues rather than indulging in idealized narratives.
