Marc Raibert leads Boston Dynamics as its Chairperson.

Marc Raibert's research primarily focuses on dynamic movement systems, spanning from physical robots to animated entities. His renowned Leg Lab at MIT has made significant strides in developing systems that mimic dynamic movement. The lab has produced an array of innovative robots, including one-legged jumpers, bipedal runners, a four-legged robot, and two kangaroo-inspired machines. Collectively, these creations can navigate straightforward paths, maintain balance, ascend simple staircases, sprint at impressive speeds of 13.1 mph, execute various gaits, and perform basic gymnastic feats.

Marc Raibert serves as the executive director of the Boston Dynamics AI Institute, which is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group. The institute aims to tackle pressing challenges in the realm of robotics to foster genuine progress in engineering and scientific research.artificial intelligence Before founding Boston Dynamics, Raibert was an associate professor in computer science and robotics at Carnegie Mellon University and later taught electrical engineering and computer science at MIT. He established the Leg Laboratory at CMU back in 1980, which played a crucial role in laying the scientific groundwork for highly agile robots. Notably, he developed the pioneering self-balancing hopping robots, marking a significant leap in robotics technology. Raibert earned his BSEE in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University in 1973 and completed his PhD at MIT in 1977 under the guidance of Whitman Richards and Berthold Horn, with his dissertation titled 'Motor Control and Learning Using State Space Models'. In recognition of his contributions to the biomechanical analysis, synthesis, control, and application of multi-legged robots, he was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 2008.

Raibert's vision is to push the boundaries of bipedal and quadrupedal robotic capabilities to extraordinary levels. Google acquired Boston Dynamics in December 2013, with Raibert expressing enthusiasm for Andy Rubin and Google's ambition to think big with the necessary resources to make it a reality. However, by March 2016, Google initiated the sale of Boston Dynamics, which was subsequently acquired by SoftBank in June 2017, and later by Hyundai Motor Group in 2020.

At the onset of 2024, a team from the Boston Dynamics AI Institute is set to arrive in the Greater Zurich area. This move, according to an announcement from the Institute, aims to foster growth and attract top talent in Europe, leveraging the benefits of artificial intelligence.

2023

The AI Institute has launched a new initiative to research ethics in robotics and AI, appointing Dr. Kate Darling to head this critical exploration. In her role, Darling will guide a team of researchers in addressing pressing societal questions connected to the evolution of intelligent machines.

As robotics and AI evolve at an unprecedented pace, we face challenges in public perception, technological literacy, regulatory frameworks, and media representation. Scientific data is crucial in shaping discussions and guiding technological progress moving forward. Darling's team intends to delve into immediate and future challenges concerning the implementation of robots and their impacts on various sectors, including infrastructure and the workplace. They will conduct research and experiments to generate data, equipping others with the insights needed to make informed ethical and policy decisions. Additionally, the team will orchestrate a series of lectures and workshops that intersect robotics, ethics, law, and economics, cultivating an environment for expansive dialogue.

The aim is to enhance communication capabilities of the robot dog, Spot, enabling it to interact with humans through spoken language. Designed for intricate environments, Spot can now interpret inquiries and relay mission reports in human terms. This milestone in robotics signifies a leap forward in intelligent robotic capabilities.
