During his undergraduate years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he contributed to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). It was here he got acquainted with Tim Berners-Lee's open web standards. Together with colleague Eric Bina, he developed an intuitive graphics-enabled browser capable of running across various computer systems. This innovation led to the creation of the Mosaic Web browser, prompting Andreessen and Bina to leave NCSA and establish Netscape.
At Andreessen Horowitz, Marc has donned multiple hats as a general partner and cofounder. He stands out as a visionary who has not only pioneered a software category utilized by over a billion users but has also been instrumental in launching several multibillion-dollar enterprises.
Marc played a crucial role in founding Netscape, which was acquired by AOL for an impressive $4.2 billion. He also co-wrote the landmark Mosaic browser. In addition, he co-founded Loudcloud, which later became Opsware, acquired by Hewlett-Packard for $1.6 billion. Serving on the Hewlett-Packard board from 2008 until 2018, Marc holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
