Ola's Bhavish Aggarwal presented ‘Krutrim,’ a new language model aimed at bolstering AI advancements in Indian languages.
In Brief
As a key figure in Ola, Bhavish Aggarwal has unveiled Krutrim, a language model that can create expressive pieces, from narratives to poetry, in various Indian languages.

Krutrim Si Designs, an Indian AI company, has launched Krutrim — a comprehensive language model capable of generating stories, poems, and more across multiple Indian languages. large language model Founded in April 2023, Krutrim Si Designs is led by Bhavish Aggarwal, who also established the ride-hailing service Ola.
Aggarwal unveiled Krutrim, a term that means 'artificial' in Sanskrit, during a hybrid live-streamed event on YouTube, showcasing it in two different versions.
The foundational model, known as Krutrim, has been trained using a staggering two trillion tokens and datasets, enabling it to comprehend 20 languages and respond in 10, including Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, and Kannada.
Looking ahead, Krutrim Pro, another advanced multimodal AI model, is set for release in 2024, promising enhanced problem-solving and task execution capabilities. Indian languages According to the announcement, Krutrim has been designed to address the unique requirements of the Indian milieu, marking a significant step towards technological independence and embracing cultural diversity.
Aggarwal noted, 'Currently, most AI models, termed LLMs, are predominantly trained in English, but language encompasses more than mere text; it's a medium for cultural values, context, and ethos. The present AI frameworks fail to embody India's rich culture, knowledge, and aspirations in light of our diverse cultural and linguistic landscape.'
He also emphasized that this model aims to nurture a culturally rich India, leading towards an AI-driven economy and challenging established global standards. AI model Ravi Jain, the Chief Marketing Officer at Ola, elaborated on the model’s architecture, highlighting that Krutrim is packed with numerous innovations and represents the largest dataset utilized in its training. It aims for an optimal balance between performance and cost, foreseen to empower many database applications.

Local Indian Players Compete to Develop LLMs in Native Languages
The Krutrim team asserts that this AI model outstrips GPT-4 in its support for Indian languages. With its capability to understand and generate content in 20 Indian languages, it stands as a leading contender in the AI arena.
To make Krutrim more accessible, Ola has launched a dedicated website for the Krutrim AI model. Interested users can register their interest by providing their phone numbers, ensuring they receive updates as soon as the chatbot is available. https://t.co/eyBeiOTKgB

Aggarwal previously stated that Krutrim would serve as an AI venture specifically tailored for Indian consumers, tapping into the rich data assets available within the nation.
In a recent development, another Indian generative AI startup, Sarvam AI, introduced the first Hindi-language large language model (LLM) as part of the OpenHathi series, shortly after securing $41 million in a Series A funding round led by Lightspeed Ventures.
Sarvam AI aims for the OpenHathi series to foster the creation of open models and datasets to spur innovation in AI for Indian languages. They are collaborating with academic partners from AI4Bharat, who are contributing crucial language resources and benchmarks for this effort.
Furthermore, a solution crafted in collaboration with Indian conversational AI startup CoRover.ai called BharatGPT has emerged. Intended to bridge gaps in current generative AI and LLM offerings, BharatGPT provides an indigenous alternative and operates in over 12 Indian languages, facilitating interactions across video, voice, and text platforms.
It will be fascinating to observe how these local Indian LLMs influence various industries, potentially igniting increased interest in this domain globally.
