NATO Finalizes €1 Billion Fund Aimed at Deep Tech Investments, with AI Highlighted as a Key Focus Area

Today, NATO made a noteworthy announcement about the formal establishment of its €1 billion venture capital initiative known as the NATO Innovation Fund (NIF).

The NIF is specifically designed to fuel innovative breakthroughs in deep technology across both public and private sectors, aiding ambitious startups in developing 'emerging and disruptive technologies.' According to NATO, key focus areas for this fund include artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, energy and propulsion systems, manufacturing, and outer space applications.

The Fund's Limited Partners include representatives from 23 NATO member nations at the highest levels of government, venture capital, innovation, and defense sectors. Participating countries range from Belgium to the United Kingdom, including Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Türkiye.

While Sweden is not currently a NATO member, it has shown interest in joining the NIF, with its participation expected to commence upon its accession to the North Atlantic Treaty.

Mr. David van Weel, NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, has welcomed Sweden's anticipated involvement, stating: \"This year’s Summit has paved the way for Sweden to potentially become the 32nd member of our Alliance, which would allow Sweden to take part in the NATO Innovation Fund and contribute significantly to its vital objectives.\"

The Fund will target direct investments in startups located within the 23 allied nations involved, as well as indirect investments in deep tech initiatives that have a trans-Atlantic influence. It is focused on adapting to the unique needs and timeframes of deep tech innovators, aiming to create a sustainable and promising horizon for the Alliance’s extensive population of one billion citizens.
