‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ unveils Gizmoplex Metaverse for upcoming episodes
In the near future, you'll be able to immerse yourself in the adventures of those witty robots critiquing cheesy films and their spaceship-confined captives in a completely new format. Mystery Science Theater 3000, fondly referred to as MST3K, is a beloved comedy series that made its debut back in 1988 thanks to Joel Hodgson, and it now boasts its own space in the metaverse, aptly named the Gizmoplex .
After a hiatus of several years, MST3K made a grand return on Netflix in 2017 and 2018, followed by a nationwide tour. Now, following a pandemic-related standstill, the much-anticipated 13th season of the show is set to kick off. CNET Hodgson, along with newer cast member Emily Marsh, shared insights during an interview for the 'I’m So Obsessed' podcast, where Hodgson described Gizmoplex as a straightforward web portal.
He elaborated, saying, 'The Mads, inconsiderate as ever [mad scientist Kinga Forrester, portrayed by Felicia Day alongside Patton Oswalt as her sidekick Max], have taken it upon themselves to manage distribution directly by establishing their own Cineplex on the moon. The way to watch these films is by renting a Cambot already stationed on the lunar surface. It's essentially a rental experience where you can navigate through the Gizmoplex.'
While Hodgson doesn't place much emphasis on this aspect, the Gizmoplex basically serves as a metaverse for die-hard fans of MST3K, and interestingly, a VR headset isn't a requirement to enjoy it. Hodgson believes it offers a richer experience compared to merely watching on a screen, allowing fans to stream both new and classic episodes.
The Gizmoplex is set to live stream new episodes of MST3K every two weeks until the end of the year. Moreover, fans can now purchase a Gizmoplex Season Pass now, which provides access to everything.
Season 13 of Mystery Science Theater 3000 begins May 6, 2022.
