MetaMask and Blockaid Team Up to Introduce New Warning System Against Malicious Activities
In Brief
In a collaborative effort, MetaMask and Blockaid have launched a new feature aimed at enhancing user security by providing alerts about potentially harmful decentralized applications (dapps).

MetaMask , in a trailblazing partnership with Blockaid This new feature allows users to receive alerts concerning harmful dapps without sacrificing their privacy.
Navigating the ever-evolving web3 landscape poses unique challenges, particularly in balancing security and privacy. Traditionally, ensuring the validity of security alerts required user data to be shared with external parties, but MetaMask breaks this norm by giving users the freedom to protect both their privacy and security.
This groundbreaking feature, currently exclusive to the Ethereum Mainnet, enables users to simulate transactions prior to commitment, effectively warning them of any potential scams. Those interested can activate this option via the 'Experimental' tab in their settings.

MetaMask Advanced Protection
Blockaid’s system showcased its capabilities last month by identifying a harmful dapp a full day before a relevant tweet came from the compromised account of Ethereum’s co-founder, Vitalik Buterin. This swift action protected users and saved them from losing over $100,000 in assets. Another close call occurred when a similar incident affected the Twitter account of Uniswap's founder, Hayden Adams.
With the recent rise in phishing scams, a staggering 10% of dapps are now considered dangerous according to Blockaid. Unfortunately, these threats seem to be a constant concern in the space.
A troubling trend has emerged where unintended transaction outcomes result in significant financial losses for users within MetaMask. There are instances where users mistakenly approve transactions that drain their wallets or lead to inadvertent sales of cherished assets.
In response to this issue, an experimental alert was rolled out for Opensea back in April 2023, which successfully protected assets totaling around $500 million. Building on the positive results of this initiative, the recent partnership between MetaMask and Blockaid aims to safeguard even larger asset values.
A Holistic Approach to Security
MetaMask is employing a well-rounded strategy for risk management. The impressive launch of MetaMask Snaps last month introduced an array of community-driven features designed to enhance transaction visibility. These improvements not only boost MetaMask’s capabilities but also strengthen its overall security framework.
In addition, efforts are ongoing to expand the MetaMask Phishing Detect list, which proactively identifies harmful dapps before users connect their wallets. To combat scams effectively, MetaMask emphasizes the importance of user education, offering resources through the MetaMask Learn platform, which includes valuable insights on security safety.
MetaMask is steadfast in its mission to redefine security measures in the web3 environment through its various partnerships. With a strong commitment to user protection, the platform stays true to its foundational values: decentralization, privacy, and security.
