Mark Zuckerberg announced in a Facebook post Zuckerberg shared on Monday that Meta is launching a new product division specifically designed for generative AI.
This new product division will unify various teams engaged in generative AI projects within the company, with the objective of creating 'engaging experiences' using this technology across all Meta platforms.
Initially, the team's focus will be on creating 'creative and expressive tools'; however, in the long run, they aim to develop 'AI personas' that can assist users in multiple ways. They plan to delve into text experiences like those found in WhatsApp and Messenger, visual innovations such as unique Instagram filters and advertisement formats, as well as video and multi-modal applications.
According to Axios The newly formed product team will operate under the guidance of Chris Cox, Meta's Chief Product Officer, and will be led by Ahmad Al-Dahle, who is Meta's VP of AI, ML & Core Tech, following a 16-year tenure at Apple before joining Meta in April of 2020.
Zuckerberg expressed his enthusiasm in a statement, indicating that while there's a significant amount of foundational work ahead before achieving the truly innovative experiences, he's looking forward to the exciting developments that they will create along the way.
This announcement is part of Meta's broader strategy to expand its focus beyond just social media, branching out into diverse domains like virtual and augmented reality, e-commerce, the metaverse, NFTs, and now generative AI. It's apparent that Meta recognizes the transformative potential of generative AI, which employs machine learning algorithms to generate new content — whether that's text, images, video, or even music, across various sectors like entertainment, advertising, healthcare, and education.
With a wealth of user data at its disposal and significant financial resources, Meta is strategically positioned to make a mark in this fast-evolving sector. The establishment of this product team underscores the company's commitment to incorporating generative AI into its future roadmap. Nonetheless, it's worth noting that Meta's two AI chatbots, Galactica and Blenderbot which were launched last year, faced backlash regarding their functionality, leading to Meta suspending the public demo of Galactica just three days post-launch.
Last week, Meta introduced unveiling a new large language model known as LLaMa (Large Language Model Meta AI) for AI researchers.
As various tech giants dive into the realm of generative AI, Elon Musk is reportedly putting together a team to develop a rival to ChatGPT, based on insider information. The Information Sources have indicated that Musk is enlisting Igor Babuschkin, a former employee at OpenAI and an ex-senior research engineer from Google’s DeepMind AI division.
