In the latest reveal, Mark Zuckerberg has introduced a series of new prototype headsets developed by Meta.

In his engaging video, Mark Zuckerberg discussed Meta's long-anticipated VR headset project, highlighting three innovative models with unique code names: Butterscotch, Starburst, Holocake 2, and Mirror Lake.

During a brief video presentation, Meta's CEO and founder shared insights from his company's Reality Labs team, detailing their ambitious quest to develop an extended reality (XR) experience that can successfully mimic what is termed as 'a visual Turing test.' This means the headset should be able to deceive your mind into perceiving its digital visuals as genuine as the physical world. XR Zuckerberg and Reality Labs' Chief Scientist, Michael Abrash, have identified four main hurdles that a next-generation VR headset must overcome to successfully pass this visual Turing test: The challenge of varifocality, which involves the ability to rapidly change focus within a virtual environment. Can users swiftly adjust focus from near to far, and will both eyes perceive this change similarly to how they would in reality? The distortion challenge pertains to how lenses manipulate light as it passes through them. Achieving minimal distortion to the extent that users don’t even realize they’re viewing through lenses is crucial for truly immersive XR experiences.

  1. The retina resolution challenge aims to eliminate the perception of pixelation, making virtual visuals appear seamless and lifelike.
  2. High Dynamic Range (HDR) is another significant hurdle, as this technology delineates the vast range of light and shadow we encounter in real life. Few current displays have successfully implemented this, although advancements are forthcoming.
  3. Another familiar challenge for users of even the most advanced Oculus headsets is reducing the overall bulk and weight of the devices themselves. With Holocake 2, one of the prototypes showcased by Zuckerberg, Meta is experimenting with holographic optics to minimize the thickness of the lenses and shorten the distance between the user’s eyes and the display. Utilizing folded optics helps create a more streamlined path for light to reach the viewer's eyes.
  4. Meta has produced an illustrative image to clarify this operation.

While these developments are thrilling, it’s essential to note that these are merely prototypes and not ready for market release. Furthermore, Zuckerberg has not explicitly linked these headsets to Cambria, which is slated for a launch later in 2022. Nevertheless, it’s reasonable to assume that many features from Holocake could be included, particularly the advancements in optics.

This clearly signals Meta's continued shift away from traditional social media into the expanding realm of virtual platforms. Although it’s tempting to speculate on the future direction based on this video, we’ll have to wait a bit longer for concrete developments.

NASA is kicking off a VR challenge aimed at facilitating astronaut missions to Mars. Project Cambria Zuckerberg has confirmed that NFTs will be making their way to Instagram in the coming months.

Meta's Project Cambria VR headset is set to launch within this year.
