In a bid to slash Ethereum finalization expenses by a remarkable 90%, Linea has introduced its Alpha v2 version.
In Brief
The recently launched Alpha V2 upgrade by Linea features important improvements, notably the incorporation of proof aggregation along with enhanced data compression functionality.

ConsenSys’ Layer2 network Linea Linea's mainnet has officially seen the rollout of Alpha v2, a transformative upgrade designed to significantly lower the costs associated with data publication and the validation of ZK proofs within the Ethereum network, achieving a reduction of up to 90%.
According to their announcement, Alpha V2 was launched on Linea's Mainnet on February 13th and presents two key enhancements: Proof Aggregation and Data Compression.
In a heartfelt message on platform X, Linea expressed immense gratitude towards its patient community, emphasizing their central role in the ecosystem and excitement about the launch of Alpha V2, with promises of more advancements ahead.
In the original Alpha V1 iteration, each transaction on Linea was subjected to zkSNARK proof verification, which came with a hefty gas cost of approximately 400k gas. However, with proof aggregation, Linea now merges several sequential transaction batches into a singular final proof, dramatically lowering verification costs. Ethereum This new enhancement has reduced the fixed costs for proof verification to about one-thirtieth of what they were in Alpha V1, meaning that ZK proof verification now only represents around 0.5% of the total costs.
Recognizing the steep gas fees tied to data storage on Ethereum's Layer 1, Linea has adopted a strategic method for data compression. This technique enhances the compression ratio through a lossless algorithm akin to popular compressing methods like gzip and deflate, which leads to significant reductions in data usage.
During high-traffic periods, the compression ratios can soar up to 15 times better than before. Plus, Linea now has the capability to store up to 123kb of data per submission, a significant increase from the previous limit of 70kb.
Alpha V2 Upgrade Offers Remarkable Savings and Lower Gas Fees
Reportedly, Linea's Alpha V2 upgrade has yielded substantial cost benefits. For example, while Alpha V1 could wrap up a single finalization transaction that grouped together 146 Linea transactions, Alpha V2 has stepped it up by validating 38,396 transactions across 31 batches, resulting in approximately a fourfold reduction in finalization costs.
For users, this means a drastic 66% decrease in Layer 1 rollup costs, making Linea up to 1/40th less expensive than standard L1 pricing, thus positioning it as one of the most affordable L2 rollups in the Ethereum landscape.
Looking ahead, the Linea team is gearing up for the forthcoming Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP)-4844 and the Dencun upgrade scheduled for March 13th. Their goal is to capitalize on these upcoming changes to drive even greater cost efficiencies within the Linea platform. Ethereum With this upgrade announcement, Linea aims to lower gas fees and cultivate a vibrant decentralized ecosystem for various applications, bolstered by the unwavering backing and collaboration of its community.
