In reaction to these apprehensions, the EU is working on defining the Artificial Intelligence Act , which aspires to create a cohesive regulatory and legal environment for AI throughout its member nations.

The EU AI Act, a pioneering piece of legislation targeting artificial intelligence from a primary regulator, intends to find a balance between shielding individuals from adverse effects like biased decision-making and privacy invasion, while also nurturing innovation and competitiveness within the EU digital economy.

On Friday, Italy's data protection authority swiftly imposed a ban on ChatGPT, citing violations of privacy rights. OpenAI is now under pressure to respond to the concerns raised by this authority; failing to adequately address these issues could lead to heavy penalties for the firm.

Germany Might Be the Next EU Country to Take Cues from Italy

Ulrich Kelber, the German data protection commissioner, has reported to  informed  the Handelsblatt that due to worries over data safety, Germany may also look into blocking access to ChatGPT.

Kelber mentioned that Germany could pursue actions akin to those taken in Italy, although such decisions will ultimately rest at the state level. However, he refrained from disclosing any specifics about potential plans for such measures, as reported by Reuters.

Data protection regulators in both France and Ireland have confirmed they've reached out to their Italian counterparts to discuss findings related to ChatGPT. Conversely, Sweden's data protection authority has indicated it's not planning to restrict ChatGPT and hasn't engaged with the Italian authorities.

According to Forbes , several cities in France are conducting their own assessments to scrutinize the effects of ChatGPT’s usage. For instance, Montpellier is deliberating a ban on ChatGPT for municipal personnel as a precautionary step.

The UK’s independent data watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office, has stated that while they encourage innovation in AI, they are ready to take action against any breaches of data protection regulations.

Alongside Italy, ChatGPT remains banned in countries like China, North Korea, Cuba, Russia, and Iran.
