Google is kicking off its account deletion process in December for those accounts that haven’t been logged into for a minimum of two years, as they announced on Tuesday.

To expunge old accounts from Gmail When your account is deleted, not only do you lose your access to Google Docs, Workspace, Photos, and other services, but you also forfeit any YouTube videos you uploaded, as well as your work in Google products.

On Wednesday, Ruth Kricheli, a senior official in product management at Google, revealed the new policy, emphasizing that it’s aimed at safeguarding users from security vulnerabilities, given that dormant accounts are more prone to being hacked.

According to an internal review, Google discovered that inactive accounts are significantly less likely to feature two-factor authentication compared to those that are regularly used. Ms. Kricheli noted, 'These stagnant accounts are at risk of fraud or harmful content, and if they're compromised, they can become tools for identity theft or even a channel for spam and other unwanted material.'

As part of its new policy, Google has begun the active deletion of accounts that have never been utilized. Users were previously alerted about this measure via Gmail and any secondary email addresses they had provided before any account removal took place.

Ms. Kricheli clarified that only personal Google accounts are subject to this deletion policy. Educational institutions and businesses that use Google services such as Gmail will remain unaffected.

If you haven’t used your Google account in two years and don’t want to see it deleted, you can keep it active simply by logging into Gmail or any other Google service like Google Drive, conducting a Google search, or downloading an app from the Google Play Store. Additionally, anyone with an active subscription related to a Google account, such as one connected to a news site, will be classified as an active user to prevent account deletion.
