Veterans from Google's Research Division Raise $7 Million for AI Platform 'Luda'

In Brief

This innovative platform empowers individuals to create, train, and deploy their own AI agents utilizing state-of-the-art Real-Time Reinforcement Learning (RT-RL) technology.

Today, Luda, an AI-centric company specializing in user-generated content (UGC) gameplay, has come out of its phase of secrecy to declare a $7 million funding round led by notable investors.

Luda Notably, figures such as Google AI lead Jeff Dean and Illia Polosukhin, who co-founded NEAR, were also involved in this funding initiative. BITKRAFT and Compound The vision of Luda is to allow users to create, train, and deploy their unique AI agents using Real-Time Reinforcement Learning (RT-RL). This is made possible through Mels, a browser-based simulation that harnesses generative AI for character animation.

Unlike the traditional avatars commonly found in gaming, users of Luda can engineer characters or AI agents from modular components within a digital creative space. Once these characters are designed, Luda’s RT-RL technology animates them, adhering to the principles of real-world physics.

As highlighted by Vijay Sundaram, the Founder and CEO of Luda, 'You can design our AI characters with any shape you can imagine using blocks similar to Lego, breathe life into them, and engage with them to uncover spontaneous behaviors. This can all happen without any pre-made animations or coding, whether from us or our users.'

The inception of Luda dates back five years when a team at Google Research was pioneering generative AI methods like RT-RL, ultimately aiming to develop a fresh category of consumer experiences involving immersive interactive AI agents.

Founded by seasoned professionals from Google Research, Disney, and Zynga, the company is motivated by a vision that integrates advanced tech with engaging play, revolutionizing user experiences.

'The potential of AI brings a surge of optimism, yet much of the conversation around it creates a barrier for consumers, often making it seem intimidating. We believe there is another narrative, one where AI is both approachable and empowering, allowing everyone not just to benefit from it but to understand it well enough to create with it,' Sundaram stated. 'In our eyes, the most delightful place to start is within the joyful realm of play.'

How RT-RL Enhances Interaction with AI Agents

Luda emphasizes that RT-RL accelerates the learning process for AI agents, which significantly shortens training durations. Furthermore, their Low-Latency Inference technology enables these agents to operate seamlessly on consumer devices rather than relying on expensive data center servers.

The ethos of Luda places individuals at the core of AI development, which is reflected in its platform that fosters Human Interactivity, allowing for immediate engagement with AI agents.

'Our agents are designed to be real-time, 3D, and grounded in physics, meaning users can interact with them within immersive environments, such as gaming realms or augmented reality, and can enjoy playing with them in physics-engaged setups, similar to obstacle courses,' Sundaram further articulated.

Rather than just streamlining existing user-generated content platforms, Luda aspires to transform AI agents into a completely new medium of interaction.

'YouTube showcased the potential of UGC in video, while Minecraft and Roblox extended that to gaming; we, along with many others, aim to open up the same possibilities for UGC with AI agents, building on the technical and social foundations laid out by those platforms,' Sundaram remarked to Metaverse Post.
