Perplexity AI has officially announced a successful raise of $26.5 million in its Series A funding round, with New Enterprise Associates taking the lead and Databricks Ventures also participating.

This funding round was supported by a notable group of angel investors, including well-established tech luminaries like Elad Gil (co-founder of Mixer Labs/Color Health), Nat Friedman (ex-CEO of GitHub), Bob Muglia (former CEO of Snowflake and ex-President of Microsoft), and Gmail creator Paul Buchheit.

Among its esteemed existing investors, the company boasts tech pioneers who have made significant contributions to search, consumer products, and AI, including Yann LeCun (Meta’s VP and Chief AI Scientist), Andrej Karpathy (a founding member of OpenAI and ex-Head of Tesla AI), Amjad Masad (Founder/CEO of Replit), Oriol Vinyals (DeepMind’s VP of Research), and Clem Delangue (CEO of HuggingFace), among many others.

Founded by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski last year, Perplexity AI has emerged as a notable player in the AI search engine domain, providing succinct and well-cited responses in real-time.

The inspiration for Perplexity AI stems from the founders' extensive academic backgrounds in scientific research and question-answering obtained during their tenure at OpenAI, Meta, Quora, Bing, and Databricks. They plan to utilize the funding for further platform expansion, user account integration, enhancement of the knowledge database, and a commitment to safeguarding user privacy.

"When individuals turn to the internet in search of information, they're usually met with a barrage of links that can be easily influenced by advertisers and SEO tactics. This forces users to navigate through a sea of websites, sifting through often untrustworthy information. Our goal with Perplexity AI is to change that narrative,\" said Aravind Srinivas, Co-Founder and CEO, in an official statement.

According to a press release, Perplexity AI claims to be witnessing about a 100% month-on-month growth rate, totaling over 10 million visits monthly, and attracting more than 2 million unique visitors in February alone.

In tandem with the funding announcement, Perplexity AI has introduced an iOS app for its search capabilities, which was previously only accessible through a desktop version and as a Chrome extension. The newly launched iOS app features include user sign-ins for personalized experiences, a continuous search history, and options for sharing on social media.
