The fraudulent Pixelmon NFT platform has been found to host malware aimed at compromising users' passwords.

According to a report from Bleeping Computer , an authentic-looking Pixelmon NFT A website that claims to provide collectors and tokens at no cost turns out to be a trap, downloading harmful password-stealing malware into users' devices.

Pixelmon is a blockchain-infused RPG inspired by Pokémon that allows players to trade Pixelmon creatures as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Despite its rocky start, where the game initially became a target for mockery on social media due to its poor graphics, it has surprisingly garnered a strong following. Bleeping Computer delves into the method behind the scammers’ scheme:

"Exploiting the growing interest, cybercriminals duplicated the legitimate pixelmon.club site to create a fraudulent version at pixelmon[.]pw, which is designed to spread malware… While it closely resembles the real site, it does not provide a demo of the game's project; instead, it offers malicious executables that infect devices with password-stealing malware.”

Security experts who focus on malware detection have linked several harmful payloads to this fraudulent website, including the notorious Vidar password-stealer. If this malware finds its way onto your device, it can start siphoning off sensitive information directly to the criminal's servers. This is particularly worrying since it could lead to the theft of your cryptocurrency wallet.

It’s crucial to heed the advice from Bleeping Computer about the current risks associated with NFT-related websites, which are increasingly becoming prime targets for scammers. Always make sure you are visiting the correct web address you intend to. It's likely that this is not the only fraudulent site out there, and as long as scammers see easy opportunities, they will continue to exploit unsuspecting users.
