The European Commission’s The EU committed €387,000 to the development of a metaverse initiative aimed at maximizing outreach, often dubbed the Global Gateway digital platform. However, during a recent virtual event, the turnout was astonishingly low.

Despite the ambition behind the EU's metaverse project intended to connect with youth, the sight of avatars mingling at a beach-themed virtual party failed to attract numbers. Devex journalist Vince Chadwick recounted his experience of connecting with just a handful of attendees before finding himself isolated.

Chadwick posted a brief clip showcasing vibrant avatars resembling paperclips moving rhythmically on a stage located in a tropical environment. One participant questioned, 'Where’s the gala?' while speculating if he had misremembered the event’s timing. Another attendee commented, 'Is anybody out there? … This concert feels like the same DJ playing repetitive tracks.'

The EU aid department presented the digital platform in mid-October. Chadwick  reported on the news Last month, internal feedback reportedly criticized the project, with one staff member openly calling it ‘digital trash’ and another describing it as ‘sad and humiliating.’
