In Brief
Last week, from July 5th to 7th, ETHBarcelona 2023 brought together crypto enthusiasts for a diverse three-day conference and hackathon, covering a range of topics related to web3 technology.
The event explored innovative concepts like SolarPunk and LunarPunk, focusing on themes of sustainability, privacy, and security.
A diverse community formed as over 1,000 attendees and 180 speakers from across the globe actively participated.
During its second iteration, ETHBarcelona hosted a three-day conference (July 5–7) and a hackathon (July 7–9), themed around SolarPunk and LunarPunk—both inspired by hopeful visions of a future where technology and ecology thrive together.

This year's conference highlighted Ethereum's commitment to environmental sustainability, evidenced by the Merge, which aims to drastically cut the network’s energy use. Another focal point was the exploration of how web3 can enhance security, particularly via Zero-Knowledge (ZK) technology to protect personal privacy.
The Barcelona event drew a crowd of over 1,000 participants and featured more than 180 expert speakers from various global backgrounds. Although the turnout was modestly smaller than the previous year, the enthusiasm remained palpable.
The venue was divided into four creatively named stages for panels and discussions: Solar Stage, Moon Stage, Stellar Room, and Space Lab. Solar Stage was spacious and flooded with light, while Moon Stage offered a more intimate and subdued atmosphere. The Stellar Room was unique, featuring discussions in a boxing ring surrounded by gym equipment, welcoming anyone interested to join the conversation. Lastly, Space Lab, located on the second floor, provided ample space for workshops and interactive sessions.

ETHBarcelona 2023 showcased a vast array of web3 tracks, reflecting the multifaceted nature of the Ethereum ecosystem, including topics like NFTs and Art, Web3 Social, DAOs and Governance, DeFi and DApps, as well as Gaming, Metaverse, Public Goods, Education, Infrastructure, Scalability, Privacy, and Security.
Prominent figures in the field graced the event, including Vlad Zamfir from Smart Transactions, Mario Havel from the Ethereum Foundation, Miguel Piedrafita from Worldcoin, Vadim Krekotin from Cryptomeria Capital, Dieter Sommer from Dfinity, and Web3 analyst Daniel Lumi among many others.
One of the key organizers, Manu Alzuru, founder of DoinGud, emphasized the goal of ETHBarcelona to leverage web3 technologies for meaningful change, fostering a community grounded in ethics, freedom, sovereignty, and privacy. 'Our gathering transcends typical conferences; it's a vibrant festival of ideas and a sharing of knowledge that knows no bounds.' said The event also highlighted NFT-based artwork displayed in a unique format where images were presented on screens and metal structures. Notably, a significant number of pieces featured female representations, possibly reflecting the event's commitment to inclusivity. Preliminary data showed a 50% female speaker ratio and 40% female attendees. The artworks featured both futuristic styles and dynamic digital visuals.
Art and Activities At ETHBarcelona 2023
Similar to the previous year ETHBarcelona was made even more captivating with vibrant purple lighting and eye-catching wall installations. Attendees were treated to a live painting session, where a skilled graffiti artist transformed a blank wall into an artistic depiction of a cat with striking orange fur and blue eyes.

Music filled the Cultural Hall with a new DJ taking charge every hour or two. Participants could also jump into retro games like Nintendo Game Boy and Street Fighter II or indulge in meditation and breathwork sessions in the nearby Recharge Zone.
The venue's location was conveniently close to the beach, just a short 10-minute stroll away, which many attendees enjoyed taking advantage of during the sunny Spanish summer.
Events like ETHBarcelona hold significant importance in the crypto community, serving as a vital platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration. The conference acted as a catalyst for inspiration and project developments rooted in Ethereum technology.
