ELSA Secures $23 Million to Enhance AI-Driven Language Learning Platform
In Brief
ELSA, the developer of the ELSA Speak English tutoring app, has accomplished raising $23 million in Series C funding.
In addition, the company has introduced the ELSA AI Tutor, designed to facilitate English learning through natural conversational interactions harnessing Generative Voice AI.
With the newly acquired funds, ELSA plans to enter international markets such as Taiwan, South Korea, and various countries in the Middle East.

ELSA The company noted that the funding would also be used to form partnerships with businesses and educational institutions in regions like Japan, where there is a keen interest in improving English language skills.
According to ELSA, the new AI Tutor features role-playing exercises that allow learners to listen and respond. Moreover, its sophisticated speech recognition technology provides thorough evaluations and constructive feedback on English fluency to track users' progress effectively.
"English proficiency is increasingly seen as a crucial skill in today’s job market,\" commented Dr. Xavier Anguera, co-founder of ELSA and a reputable expert in speech technology. \"Practicing listening and verbalizing is vital for achieving fluency and proper pronunciation.\"
The ELSA platform, co-founded by Vu Van, who also serves as CEO, and Anguera, came to life in 2015. Notably, the company secured $15 million in its Series B funding round back in 2021.
The ELSA AI Tutor relies on advanced AI-powered voice recognition technology, which has been refined using English audio data from 34 million global learners. The company proudly reports over 50 million downloads of its app and has created an extensive library of 200 million hours of anonymous English audio data accumulated over seven years.
This rich dataset empowers ELSA to enhance its platform, providing tailored lessons that address the unique needs of each learner. Following each role-play session, users receive tailored feedback regarding various aspects of their English abilities, including pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, intonation, rhythm, and more.
How ELSA AI works
This personalized feedback is retained in the user’s ELSA profile, allowing the AI tutor to consider past mistakes and adapt future lessons accordingly.
Starting today, ELSA introduces a free access option enabling users to try out a limited range of scenarios. Alternatively, users can upgrade to the Premium subscription for unlimited access to scenarios and feedback. The new ELSA AI Tutor feature will be integrated into the ELSA Speak App and will be automatically rolled out to all existing users.
In recent months, AI language tutor applications have attracted substantial attention from investors. For instance, in August, the OpenAI-backed language tutoring app Speak made headlines.
While ELSA maintains its focus on English language acquisition, Speak aims to facilitate English speakers in learning other languages, with plans for a United States launch in the near future.
