Coda Labs has sponsored a study The Global Web3 Study to investigate gamers' perspectives on cryptocurrency, NFTs, and the blockchain gaming sector. The research, also conducted with assistance from the data platform WALR, delves into whether the prevailing opposition among some gamers to Web3 reflects a genuine dislike or if these concerns stem from viewing blockchain gaming as an unwelcome innovation.
The findings disclosed that investments in blockchain gaming soared to $5 billion in the first half of 2022. Various investment firms and tech companies are rapidly channeling funds into startups focused on Web3 gaming and the metaverse, indicating a strong belief in the future of technologically advanced gaming. Nonetheless, a segment of gamers still appears lukewarm towards Web3 gaming, citing several drawbacks. The investigation spanned June 2022 and involved 6,921 gamers, ranging from casual players to both crypto enthusiasts and those uninterested in crypto, from the U.S., U.K., Brazil, South Africa, and Japan. Those heavily involved with cryptocurrency were found to be five times more likely to play games than those who aren't. On a satisfaction scale from 1 to 10, casual gamers rated their feelings towards crypto at 4.5 and NFTs at 4.3. In contrast, crypto gamers showed higher enthusiasm, rating cryptocurrencies at 8.1 and NFTs at 7.5. However, average sentiments for both emerged as neutral, with scores of 5.2 for crypto and 5.0 for NFTs.
Responses varied significantly based on geographic location. Participants from Brazil and South Africa displayed a more favorable view of cryptocurrency, scoring 7 and 6.9, respectively, whereas Japanese respondents were less enthusiastic, scoring just 3.7.
A notable 29% of those surveyed reported owning Bitcoin, and 13% held Ethereum. Interestingly, there's a surprising interest among gamers in Dogecoin, with 8% being owners. A quarter had explored cryptocurrency within the past six months, while 15% made purchases during the same time frame.
In sharp contrast, only 3% of traditional gamers claimed ownership of even a single NFT. This figure is significantly higher among the crypto-savvy individuals, where 62% of non-gaming crypto holders and just under half (46%) of crypto gamers reported having NFTs. Notably, a majority—75%—of NFT owners in the survey possess game-related NFTs.

Action, Adventure, and Shooter games followed closely, with 44% of gamers and 67% of crypto players interested. Strategy games captured the attention of 37% of all gamers and 55% of crypto gamers.
