Discord Embarks on AI Feature Trials, Launches Innovative Incubator

Discord is unrolling various AI features within select servers, kicking off with Clyde, its chatbot that now melds OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology. 

Clyde is an established bot within Discord that interacts with users via slash commands or sends DMs when they make mistakes. The recent upgrade with ChatGPT means Clyde can now engage in more in-depth conversations and respond to queries. Plus, it can recommend music playlists and share GIFs and emojis. Users have the option to opt-out of this functionality.

Some users expressed reservations about the chat application's new AI integration, worrying that the chatbot might gather their data covertly. 

Taking to Twitter to voice their discontent , while some users accused Discord of modifying its Terms of Service in a way that could infringe on user privacy by tracking and archiving voice calls, screen shares, streams, and voice chat interactions. In its communications, privacy policy , Discord noted that they do gather information that users provide, including the content they create. According to their Terms of Service By using Discord, users grant the platform permission to utilize their content.

Anjney Midha, Discord’s VP of Platform Ecosystem, reassured users in a blog entry that OpenAI “won’t be using Discord user data to train its overarching models” and confirmed that Discord has “made certain that Clyde does not record, store, or utilize any data from voice or video calls.” 

One of the initiatives that kicked off in a few servers on March 9 is Automod AI, a new AI-driven version of AutoMod. Introduced last year, AutoMod has already succeeded in blocking over 45 million problematic messages from various servers. Utilizing OpenAI technology and trained on extensive language models, Automod AI can detect when server rules are potentially broken and alert the moderator based on the conversation context.

Beginning next week, select users will have the chance to test the Conversation Summaries feature, which organizes message threads into topics, allowing users to quickly catch up on discussions that have progressed while they were away.
