Digital Artist Egor Golopolosov Discusses the Impact of AI on the Art Sector

In Brief

Metaverse Post engaged with the talented digital artist and illustrator Egor Golopolosov.

Egor shared insights on how artificial intelligence is shaping the art world, recounting his journey into the realm of NFTs as well.

Art has always served as a mirror for our societal structure, and with the rapid pace of technological advancement, it has evolved in previously unimaginable ways. One of those advancements is artificial intelligence. Today, AI has become more than just a trendy term in the tech space; it is a medium that has the potential to revolutionize not just the art world, but many other fields as well.

To delve deeper into AI's role within the art industry, Metaverse Post spoke with Egor Golopolosov, a digital artist, illustrator, and art commentator.

Egor draws inspiration from comics, street art, and animation. With over a decade of experience in both advertising and art sectors, his impressive portfolio features collaborations with high-profile brands like Casio, Adidas, Nike, Disney, and Coca-Cola. He has also launched several NFT collections and is currently exploring how AI tools can enhance his artistic creations.

What inspired you to venture into creating non-fungible tokens?

My goal has always been to ensure that my art resonates well in both digital formats and physical pieces. This passion led me to delve into the world of non-fungible tokens, alongside traditional canvases. The remarkable success of Beeple encouraged artists worldwide to connect and form NFT communities, and I found my place among them. We would exchange knowledge and support each other at every step, from establishing a crypto wallet to minting our art.

During that period, I successfully created and minted multiple NFT collections, contributed to a documentary on non-fungible tokens, and participated in various TV interviews.

Were these endeavors successful in terms of generating sales?

Sales turned out to be quite impressive. However, eventually, I shifted my focus to art direction, guiding fellow artists through the creation of their own NFT projects.

Is artificial intelligence part of your design process?

Currently, I utilize Midjourney to gather references for my artistic projects. In my view, AI acts not as a replacement for creatives, but as a valuable collaborator. Additionally, I sometimes turn to ChatGPT for crafting copy for my social media profiles.

How is AI shaping the design and art production landscape?

As it stands, AI has already begun to influence artists' contributions to commercial projects. For instance, clients can articulate their visions and attach AI-generated artwork as references. This method enables artists to receive thorough explanations from clients. Here, artificial intelligence is enhancing efficiency and expediting results.

Copyright related to artificial intelligence is a pertinent topic. What are your thoughts on this matter?

Right now, the internet is teeming with AI-generated artworks that bear a striking resemblance to those created by well-known artists. Nevertheless, these pieces are not direct copies and, in my opinion, do not infringe on intellectual property rights. It's crucial to indicate when a piece is generated using AI by labeling it \"Made by AI.\" Moreover, if there is any explicit reference to a particular artist, it’s essential to credit them appropriately. This rule extends to artworks showcased in any publication or medium. Commercial works produced using AI tools should also carry the labeling of \"Made by AI.\"

Do you believe that AI could take away jobs from artists and designers? social media blogs AI might take over some aspects of their work; however, I don't foresee it completely displacing artists and designers. I think that contemporary creators should embrace AI as a vital tool, much like a trusty pencil. There’s no need to fear artificial intelligence or resist the wave of technological advancement.

What skills should aspiring artists master if they wish to incorporate AI into their work?

What creators truly need is a well-developed imagination combined with the skill to translate ideas into clear and concise text.

What do you foresee for the future of artificial intelligence in the art sector? Will AI-created works hold the same value as those crafted by human hands?

In just a few years, people will become accustomed to the notion that images and videos can be generated by AI. Such creations will become widely accepted and sought after. I believe the presence of human input in the art-making process will add unique value to every piece. Viewers will start to appreciate the significance of artworks made by people. We will cherish the artistry involved in creating physical pieces, as well as the intricacies of illustrators sketching and sculptors shaping tangible forms. Furthermore, I think it's vital for artists, designers, and illustrators today to embrace the role of 'content creators,' sharing their artistic journeys.
