TV Services Across UAE Hit by Cyberattack as AI Anchor Presents Disturbing Images from Gaza
In Brief
Residents in the UAE experienced a significant cyber assault on their set-top boxes, which caused regular programming to be replaced with horrifying footage depicting Israeli actions in Palestine.

UAE Residents encountered an unexpected interference with their TV programs on Sunday evening, as a cyber-attack specifically aimed at set-top boxes, replacing scheduled content with updates about Israeli atrocities in Palestine.
Viewers of the disrupted service described a sudden change on European live channels, along with a message stating, “We had to hack to bring you this information,” as reported by Khaleej Times, a major English-language newspaper in the UAE.
One Dubai local, using the popular HK1RBOXX streaming device, recounted his unsettling experience:
“I was tuned into BBC News around 10:30 pm when the broadcast was suddenly interrupted. Instead, graphic images from Palestine appeared on my screen. I found myself glued to the screen, as the image froze, and a hacker's message appeared in bold letters against a green background. This was quickly followed by a news report presented by an AI anchor. It felt surreal and quite frightening.”
After the initial interruption, the screens switched to an AI news presenter covering the struggles of Palestinian children and women in Israeli prisons, paired with distressing visuals. As of now on Monday, the hacking issue persists without resolution.
In response to the flood of messages from anxious subscribers, the set-top box provider issued a statement of regret, confirming their systems had been hacked . They reassured customers that a thorough investigation into the problem was underway.
The scale of unauthorized decoder and pirate satellite dish usage in the UAE remains ambiguous. Nonetheless, broadcast piracy could lead to significant financial losses in the industry, potentially amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars.
Notable Increase in Cyberattacks as Global Conflicts Escalate
This isn't the first time such an incident has occurred; since the onset of the Israel-Palestine conflict, several cyberattack incidents similar cyberattacks have been recorded. Earlier in October, a group known as Killnet, which claims to consist of patriotic Russian hackers, announced their plans to carry out distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on all Israeli government systems.
This method of cyberattack inundates websites with excessive traffic, rendering them inoperable. The group attributed its actions to Israel's ongoing violence and claimed the nation’s backing of Ukraine and NATO as justifications. Killnet subsequently boasted about successfully disabling an Israeli government website and momentarily interrupting the Shin Bet security service's site.
In a comparable vein, an Iranian-linked hacking collective successfully breached a water treatment facility situated northwest of Pittsburgh. While the intrusion didn't compromise water safety in the United States , it starkly highlights how the ramifications of cyberattacks can echo across continents, bringing the consequences of global conflicts uncomfortably close to home.
In a recently published report, Microsoft There has been a marked increase in activity from the Gaza-based hacking faction identified as Storm-1133. Reports suggest this group has focused its efforts on Israeli entities in defense, energy, and telecommunications throughout the early months of 2023.
