CentML Secures $27 Million Investment from Google and Nvidia to Address the AI Chip Crisis
In Brief
CentML has successfully raised $27 million in funding, bolstered by support from industry giants Google and Nvidia, to tackle the urgent issue surrounding the AI chip deficit.
CentML’s cutting-edge offerings are designed to improve the efficiency of processors used for AI training.

The venture fund from Nvidia and Google, among others, has committed $27 million in seed funding to support CentML, an innovative startup focused on enhancing processors for AI applications. Other notable supporters include Gradient Ventures, Radical Ventures, Deloitte Ventures, and Thomson Reuters Ventures. pledged Amidst a significant shortage of GPUs and rising costs, Toronto-based CentML, which was established in 2022 by machine learning expert Gennady Pekhimenko, is presenting creative strategies to maximize the computing capabilities of existing hardware. CentML In response to heightened interest in its innovative solutions, CentML managed to raise an additional $30.5 million by extending its seed funding round after its initial close in 2022.
The company's software is dedicated to enhancing the efficiency of machine learning systems by optimizing how hardware resources are utilized. By evaluating systems to find underused areas and analyzing factors like cost, power consumption, and emissions, CentML's technology swiftly allocates tasks to enhance processing speed. Research reveals that the average GPU usage in the market is around 30%, yet CentML's approach could boost performance by as much as eight times.
Gennady Pekhimenko, the founder and CEO, intends to expand the workforce from the current 30 employees and plans to move into Silicon Valley to access a larger talent pool. He highlighted the growing disparity between the complexity of AI models and the available computational resources, stating, 'There’s an urgent need for computing power, and chip manufacturers can't keep up with the demand fast enough.'
With significant investments from leading technology companies in CentML’s pioneering solutions, the startup is aiming to be a crucial player in alleviating the bottleneck affecting AI progression.
