Companies like Audi and Volkswagen are actively pursuing the integration of VR technology into the driving experience.

At least two leading automakers, Volkswagen and Audi, are gearing up to introduce immersive VR and augmented reality experiences right within your vehicle. On May 5th, Microsoft revealed its collaboration with Volkswagen. In their press release, they emphasized their goal to introduce an augmented reality experience for 'moving platforms,' and soon 'passengers in the back seats' will have the chance to don 'virtual reality glasses' to dive into a variety of media formats including games, films, and more interactive content. Audi just announced Microsoft has been collaborating with Volkswagen for a number of years, utilizing HoloLens 2 for providing 'mixed reality headsets' that might help train drivers in extreme conditions or improve the user experience in self-driving cars. However, they encountered a significant hurdle—they needed to resolve tracking sensor issues crucial for merging AR with the actual view, especially inside moving vehicles.
Volkswagen claims to have overcome this challenge through extensive experimentation. Michael Wittkämper, an expert in augmented reality at Volkswagen, stated that they succeeded in connecting 'a positioning system that monitors the vehicle's location.'
In their joint release, Microsoft 'This allowed us to integrate 3D elements, such as information about points of interest outside the vehicle,' Wittkämper elaborated, 'thus creating new opportunities to not only project holograms in the driver’s direct line of sight but also wherever the user wearing the glasses is looking.'
While HoloLens 2 is currently adapted for large sea vessels, the companies are hopeful they can eventually modify the technology to work in various settings, like trains and automobiles.
Audi's holoride concept seems to share similarities, and the German manufacturer is preparing to unveil this technology at the upcoming South by Southwest event in June. The press release touts the holoride experience:
'Imagine transforming your travel time from point A to point B into a thrilling gaming adventure. Starting June 2022, backseat passengers riding in an Audi will enjoy films, games, and immersive content in a way that feels incredibly realistic while wearing VR goggles. Your car journey will evolve into a multi-faceted gaming experience.' SXSW Audi has developed a system that synchronizes virtual content displayed through the glasses with the actual movements of the vehicle. The automaker illustrated this with the example of a 'spaceship in the virtual environment' that shifts 'to the right as the car turns right.' If the car accelerates, the spacecraft responds accordingly.
Audi even coined a term for this innovative in-car media encounter: 'Elastic Content,' referring to media that continuously adapts to real-world dynamics. The company claims that this results in a depth of immersive experiences previously unseen.
While Volkswagen’s advancements with HoloLens 2 focus on assistance for the drivers, and Audi’s innovations cater to passenger entertainment, both approaches reflect a significant transformation in how we engage with our environment while in motion. Apple has submitted a patent application for a self-driving vehicle that integrates VR functionalities.
