Buenos Aires is eager to roll out ‘QuarkID’, a blockchain protocol developed on zkSync Era.

In Brief

Buenos Aires is on the brink of launching QuarkID, a cutting-edge open-source digital identity protocol leveraging Ethereum's zkSync Era.

The initiative behind QuarkID is a joint venture involving Extrimian and Matter Labs, the driving force behind Ethereum's layer-2 zkSync Era.

The Argentine capital is about to introduce QuarkID, an open-source digital identity framework based on Ethereum's technology. QuarkID This initiative aims to enhance how citizens access essential public services and is expected to commence in November, making significant advancements in digital identity management across Latin America. zkSync Era Through this progressive protocol, residents of Buenos Aires will soon be able to download the QuarkID wallet, granting them streamlined access to crucial personal documents like birth and marriage certificates—making interactions with government services far more efficient.

The collaboration behind QuarkID involves Extrimian, a pioneer in on-chain digital identity solutions, alongside Matter Labs, the innovative team behind the zkSync Era layer-2 blockchain.

Guillermo Villanueva, CEO of Extrimian, expressed excitement about the project, calling it a significant leap for safer and more efficient public services in Latin America. He noted that QuarkID fosters a closer bond between citizens and the government, while also establishing high security standards in digital identity management, working in tandem with Matter Labs and the Secretariat of Innovation of Buenos Aires. Extrimian QuarkID stands out by advocating for self-sovereignty, empowering individuals to maintain full control over their personal data. Although the first iteration will support a limited array of document types, plans are in place for a gradual rollout of additional credentials. Matter Labs This initiative is the culmination of collaborative efforts that began in 2022, with the Secretariat of Innovation and Digital Transformation in Buenos Aires teaming up with tech firms such as Extrimian, IOV Labs, OScity, and Xcapit, while actively involving the local populace.

Harnessing the technological prowess of zkSync, the QuarkID wallet is founded on Matter Labs' platform, using zkSync Era's blockchain to securely store documents. This layer serves as the foundation for the QuarkID platform, ensuring that every document remains securely under its owner's control.

Omar Azhar, Head of Business Development at Matter Labs, shared his enthusiasm for this initiative, celebrating the pioneering move by a major city to provide its residents with a digital identity solution. He emphasized how Buenos Aires is setting an important benchmark for the region and highlighted the problematic nature of identity theft, noting that blockchain technology can effectively address these concerns by preventing data manipulation and restoring individual ownership of personal information.

Starting in November, residents will have access to vital documents like income verification and attendance certificates through their digital wallets, essential for various benefits. To establish a QuarkID wallet during the initial phase, citizens must complete existing biometric know-your-customer protocols for identity verification.

The ambitious QuarkID roadmap, expected to be published by the end of the year, aims to reach over 2.5 million users by increasing the range of available credentials.

Diego Fernandez, Buenos Aires City's Secretary of Innovation, articulated his aspirations for the project, framing it as a benefit to the public. He highlighted that this initiative will position Buenos Aires as the first city in Latin America and one of the world's frontrunners in adopting and advocating for the new technology.

The shared objective is to propel decentralized digital identities forward, transforming the e-government service landscape throughout Latin America.

Latin America is rapidly becoming a significant player in adopting blockchain solutions, showcasing its readiness to integrate censorship-resistant technologies in official governmental operations and record-keeping. Moreover, there is a growing acceptance of cryptocurrency transactions among citizens in the region, especially following El Salvador's groundbreaking decision in 2021 to recognize bitcoin (BTC) as an official currency alongside the US dollar.

Buenos Aires's groundbreaking foray into blockchain-based digital identity represents a pivotal transformation in how the region approaches secure, efficient citizen services, setting a positive example for other Latin American countries to follow.
