As the election season ramps up, Reno’s mayor is at the forefront of shaping the city's cryptocurrency identity.

Last week the City of Reno, NV announced The Biggest Little Blockchain is touted as 'the first city-operated and resident-focused blockchain platform in the U.S.' This innovative project was championed by Reno's dynamic mayor, Hillary Schieve, and was developed using STRATO technology. The platform is scheduled to become operational later this summer, with the aim of bringing standardized and permanent ledger technology to Reno's Historic Registry. BlockApps In the wake of the pandemic and other developments, Reno has become a magnet for a wave of young remote workers, eager to embrace the vibe of the 'Biggest Little City in the World.' Yet, Reno isn't alone in hoping to harness the potential of cryptocurrency to rejuvenate their local community.

In a recent article discussing Schieve's initiatives, it was noted that in 2018, Miami's Mayor, Francis Suarez, was keen on transforming his city into a 'nexus for crypto innovation' based on Bitcoin. Similarly, Wyoming and the Native American Catawba Nation have worked to establish themselves as favorable environments for new cryptocurrency companies. Tesla’s Gigafactory Unlike other similar ventures, Reno’s groundbreaking initiative takes a different approach by prioritizing public works projects over external partnerships. The initial application of the Biggest Little Blockchain has no immediate financial implications.

The Biggest Little Blockchain will allow property owners and developers to apply for 'Certificates of Appropriateness' for renovations to Reno's cherished historic buildings, streamlining data sharing and collaboration that was once compartmentalized. Wired noted that “Cleveland declared itself Blockland \"With this project’s achievement, the city anticipates broadening the reach of the Biggest Little Blockchain, integrating more processes into this network, including routine maintenance tasks, permits, and licenses,\" the official announcement emphasized. Schieve pointed out that “this pioneering project gives every resident of Reno easy access to vital information, and it's only fitting that we kick off with the historic buildings that embody our community's spirit.\" tweeted The day after their announcement, Schieve discussed the Biggest Little Blockchain at the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ annual meeting, which this year took place at the Peppermill in Reno. Schieve has been a proponent of blockchain technology since diving into investments such as Chainlink six years ago. As she runs for re-election this June against ten challengers, her focus remains on weaving blockchain into the fabric of Reno’s infrastructure—aiming especially at the notorious 50-foot stained glass and steel 'Space Whale' sculpture that sits in the city's core. The 'Space Whale' sculpture was created by artist Matt Schultz for Burning Man 2016, and the City of Reno subsequently leased the piece for $64,000. However, since that lease ended in August 2019, the sculpture has endured significant wear from both people and nature. Although Schultz sought to sell 'Space Whale' to the city for $500,000, they deemed it too costly to repair. He then attempted to offer it for $1 million on an online marketplace, but that wasn't the right platform to attract a suitable buyer. This has led to the sculpture becoming quite an eyesore for the community.

Last year, Schieve contemplated the idea of creating an NFT for 'Space Whale,' where the buyer would gain rights to the artist’s CAD file, a video, and a significant bragging point. This funding could have facilitated necessary repairs, enabling the sculpture to remain in Reno. Nonetheless, as reported by GCN, “Schieve’s NFT scheme didn’t come to fruition, and in November, the city acquired the sculpture from Matthew Schultz for $137,000, with $75,000 allocated for repairs.” speculation Schieve was motivated by this endeavor, citing that their platform has a lower energy consumption than Ethereum. She even began collaborating with Tezos developers to create a fundraising platform for municipal art projects. Though this plan ultimately fell through, she caught the attention of Theodore Clapp, a 21-year-old student at the University of Nevada-Reno, eager to see his elected leader embrace his passion for alternative currencies.

Clapp reached out, and Schieve appointed him as the head of Reno’s Blockchain Board on Innovation—currently a one-person board, though he is on the lookout for additional members. At present, Clapp is concentrating on drafting a white paper outlining a futuristic vision for Reno, where residents would receive cryptocurrency equivalent to the worth of specific city-owned properties. This would potentially allow citizens to trade their shares, and in cases where land is leased or sold, all participants would benefit from the profits.

This innovative model could even lay the groundwork for unemployment systems governed by smart contracts and the issuance of death certificates via blockchain—real-world solutions enabled by the same technology that drives Bitcoin, specifically in a region that has already attracted investments from giants like Tesla, Google, and Apple. The inaugural outcomes of the Biggest Little Blockchain initiative may not only set the stage for enhanced governmental efficiency but also illustrate the broader applications of blockchain beyond mere financial transactions.
