In a move to attract a wider audience, Apple plans to roll out a less expensive iteration of the Vision Pro headset by the close of 2025.

In Brief

Apple is currently in the process of developing a budget-friendly version of the Vision Pro headset. This initiative is part of its strategy to expand its presence within the spatial computing sector.

Anticipated for a late 2025 launch, the less costly model may bear the name Apple Vision or Apple Vision One.

The recent introduction of Apple's $3,500 headset has certainly stirred the tech world. Nevertheless, the company's pursuit in spatial computing doesn't stop with just this product. They're intent on making virtual reality technology accessible to a broader demographic, evidenced by their active development of this new, affordable Vision Pro variant, as noted by Bloomberg. Vision Pro headset Mark Gurman, an Apple authority writing for Bloomberg, noted that the 'Vision Pro' name hints at the possibility of a more standard version in the pipeline, which could logically be named either 'Apple Vision' or 'Apple Vision One.' reports .

By the end of 2025, Apple aims to introduce a budget version of its Vision Pro headset, with plans for a second-generation model that features an upgraded processor, mirroring the approach seen with their iPhone lineup.

The priciest components of the Vision Pro include dual custom Apple chips, an extensive array of cameras and sensors, as well as two high-definition 4K micro-OLED displays. The cheaper version might compromise on these attributes, featuring less advanced screens, a singular chip from previous iPhone or Mac generations, and diminished camera functionalities to lower costs.

Apple could also cut expenses by streamlining the headband design, utilizing AirPods instead of built-in speakers for spatial audio, introducing manual adjustments for pupil distance, and eliminating features like the 3D camera. Gurman suggests that these modifications, paired with more efficient manufacturing practices, a less expensive build, and increased production scale, could significantly reduce the final price tag.

Gurman argues that critical features such as the EyeSight external display and the eye- and hand-tracking capabilities are fundamental to the Apple Vision experience and are unlikely to be sacrificed, as they are as crucial to the headset as touchscreens are to iPhones.

He indicates that Apple is indeed aiming to launch a mixed-reality headset at a more budget-friendly price point while having seemingly abandoned earlier concepts for AR glasses.
